Wrath of the Lich King breaks day one sales records

When it comes to the world of video games on the PC, some of the most popular games available are MMORPG titles. These same titles also offer the most profitability for the game studios thanks to monthly subscriptions and intense fan bases for the titles.

Blizzard recently launched the second expansion pack for the wildly popular World of Warcraft MMO called Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard officially acknowledged this week that Lich King has broken the sales record to become the top selling PC game ever in its first 24 hours of release.

Lich King sold a whopping 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability. Interestingly, the previous first place for day one sales was the first expansion pack for World of Warcraft called The Burning Crusade.

The subscriber base for World of Warcraft is massive at 11 million players globally making the title the crown jewel in the Blizzard games catalog. Blizzard says that over 15,000 stores opened at midnight globally to participate in the launch of Wrath of the Lich King.

Unlike some popular midnight launch events, there are no reports of anyone being shot waiting to get a copy of the game. However, one boy in Europe did collapse after playing the expansion for 24 hours straight without taking a break or eating. Some UK officials and parents fear that the game is too addictive for young players to handle.

That and convert his chair into a toilet so he can go poopy. However this kid was ill prepared for long duration gaming. He should have at least a few hotpockets lying around to fuel his gaming habits.

What a noob. Only 24 hours of gaming and he turned into that. Whenever a new game that I'm highly anticipating comes out, I spent a weekend playing it almost non-stop (aside from WC breaks). I have a mini-fridge next to my desk for drinks and non-perishable food sitting in a drawer.

Funyuns, beef jerky, granola bars, chocolate power bars, microwaveable Campbell's soups (don't need to be microwaved, just eat out the container), etc.

agreed. a noob indeed. 24 hour runs are common for me when i used to play games such as Diablo 2. it is common sense if you're going to play for an extended period of time, have food/water available close to you so this doesn't happen. not many kids these days can handle what we did back then :)

Hell, we'd have those long weekend lan parties. 40-50 of us doing nothing but gaming for a weekend. There is the 1-2 ppl who get unlucky and have to do the food run.

It's kind of sad, as online multiplayer is killing local lan parties, where 24/48 hours of gaming in a sitting was nothing.

Either you're being sarcastic or are insanely sad. I don't care how good a game is, I always stop to sleep and take break every now and then.

I agree.

Guys I am probably every bit a computer gaming fan as most of you are -- I've been playing games since I was just a kid. I happen to think WoW is great fun but my God -- some sense of balance and priorities are severely needed by some. I'll defend the game on its own merits with anyone who just wants to hack at it because they don't like it, but I tend to think 15, 24, 48 hour gaming marathons is freakish insane. Eat, sleep, see a friend, hell go over your parents house and spend time with them -- anything but playing that long.

Moderation is a good thing.
