Plextor newest DVD±R/RW CD-R/RW drive

Plextor sends word about the immediate availability of its PX-755SA DVD±R/RW CD-R/RW drive.  The multifunction drive has been aimed at system integrators and value added resellers that need a drive with a SATA connection.  The drive has recording speeds of 16X DVD±R on 16X media.  The drive will ship to North and South America immediately for $129. 

The multifunction internal PX-755SA drive is aimed at Value Added Resellers and System Integrators who require Serial ATA (SATA) connectivity, industry leading reliability, and premium recording features. The PX-755SA delivers recording speeds of 16X DVD±R on certified 16X DVD±R media. Users can burn up to four hours of high-quality MPEG-2/DVD video on a single 8.5 GB disc using 10X DVD+R on Double-Layer media and 6X DVD-R on Dual Layer media. The drive also supports 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW Rewriting; 16X max DVD-Reading; 48X CD-R Writing, 24X CD-RW Rewriting, and 48X max CD-Reading.

Gotta start somewhere

The one thing that I find to be a bit disappointing is the adoption of SATA for optical drives. I know it's not something that is needed since there are plenty of ATAPI optical drives around. But the fact remains that we rarely see SATA optical drives around. It's good that Plextor is seeking to capitalize on this. And I forgot who was the first to come out with a SATA optical drive (has it ever been released? Correct me if I'm mistaken).

The IDE interface needs to fade away. What better way to make it go away than to start releasing SATA optical drives? I hope other manufacturers (NEC and others) will follow suit and release a SATA version (natively, of course) to compete with Plextor's possible one-and-only SATA drive.

The starting price seems typical of Plextor. But it is of no surprise to me. I doubt the market will bite into this. But I am sure some hardware enthusiast will buy it up. If I got money laying around, I would get that drive, despite any possible performance problems it may have.

i hate PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse, rather have them put in more USB ports or remove them all together. USB key/mouse been out for a very long time, yet we still see these legacy ports.

If you're an engineer PS2 ports are needed when working without the USB drivers loaded. I've never noticed any discernable difference between then once windows is up apart from USB sometimes drops out which is a PITA. There was some issues with active mice draining the onboard battery when the computer wasn't on but I ain't heard any more for a while. Although I don't use the serial or parellel port lots of industrial stuff uses those to connect still even though more and more are USB or wireless.If it don't cost much to keep them or take up much real estate leave the legacy stuff there for people who still want to or have to. I'm sure sata will become the connection of choice soon but why pay a premium for the same performance when all current and future MBs for some time will have IDE on?

Because IDE cables are large, and their connections are harder to configure than SATA. Many people have trouble getting a newly-installed IDE drive to work due to jumper settings, BIOS settings, etc.

SATA is point-to-point - no jumpers, no configuration - just works.

Plextor are the first and have been the only manufacturer to my knowledge. They had a SATA DVD writer out for a few years now, and then moved on with the PX-712SA, PX-716SA, PX-755SA and also the PX-760SA. I think they also had a PX-708SA but I know the first one didn't go down well as it wasn't native and only worked on certain Intel-chipset mainboards. I'm not sure if these ones are the same. Anyway, right now, I don't think it's a big deal, what with Windows XP being awkward about SATA drivers this would make it even more of a hassle. For now, until Vista comes out (hopefully with full SATA support) IDE interfaces are fine.
