World of Warcraft reaches milestone in the lead up to the release of Wrath of the Lich King expansion

In a press release Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscribership for World of Warcraft has exceeded 11 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached as Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's second expansion, nears its worldwide launch date of November 13.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment commented on World of Warcraft reaching the milestone stating, "It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft.” He also said, “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience.”

World of Warcraft debuted in North America on November 23, 2004, and has become the most popular MMORPG around the world. According to the press release World of Warcraft was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 worldwide, and finished behind only World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, the first expansion pack for the game, in 2007. In addition to being the bestselling PC game of 2007 in both North America and Europe, The Burning Crusade holds the record for fastest-selling PC game of all time, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and approximately 3.5 million in its first month.

World of Warcraft was recently launched in Russia and Latin America, and is currently available in eight languages. In addition to North America and Europe, the game is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Are you really that niave? Lets presume that the average WoW Account generates say $10 per month. This allows for the average to include free accounts and subscription saving for long term.

With this number in mind WoW would generate 110 million dollars. That means in a quarter it would generate 440 million or 1.32 billion per year.

Now do a search for the Activision/Blizzard financials and you will find they are not even CLOSE to these numbers as an entire company. WoW is part of the PC division which accounts for only about 30% of the companies total revenue, so the fully company is not even close and the section that is only 30% is that much farther away. Now take into account the WoW is not the only game the PC division sells and suddendly we see that the numbers do not come even close.

WoW DOES NOT have 11 million active subscribers and anyone with a clue knows it. My question is why does Blizzard lie about it?

BTW based on a rough run of the numbers from last year, when WoW was claiming something like 8 million subscribers, the actual income was closer to 200,000 active. Blizzard is lying when they claim these amazing active subscriber bases.

Your forgetting the WoW is not Blizzard's only game, they are currently in development for several new games, diablo 3, and three starcraft games, plus the lich king expansion that was just released. It takes a lot of money to produce a game, and they are simultaneously working on a quite a few right now, plus probably some stuff they haven't announced. And I believe that this 11 million is slightly off, the last estimate I read was 7 million playing accounts.
