World of Warcraft reaches milestone in the lead up to the release of Wrath of the Lich King expansion

In a press release Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscribership for World of Warcraft has exceeded 11 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached as Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's second expansion, nears its worldwide launch date of November 13.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment commented on World of Warcraft reaching the milestone stating, "It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft.” He also said, “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience.”

World of Warcraft debuted in North America on November 23, 2004, and has become the most popular MMORPG around the world. According to the press release World of Warcraft was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 worldwide, and finished behind only World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, the first expansion pack for the game, in 2007. In addition to being the bestselling PC game of 2007 in both North America and Europe, The Burning Crusade holds the record for fastest-selling PC game of all time, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and approximately 3.5 million in its first month.

World of Warcraft was recently launched in Russia and Latin America, and is currently available in eight languages. In addition to North America and Europe, the game is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Someone needs to mod...

A hack into WoW which will magically turn all the WoW players into Zombies onscreen so us quakers/FPS'ers can log in and blow them all to bits.

11 Million - that is a LOT of limbs that could be flying through the air. Oh the glory. The beauty. The screams of despair as they all shout - NO PVP! (of course, being zombies all we would hear is moaning)

:)

We can dream.

I second that.... Years of creating a character and about 10 seconds to insert enough shrapnel to force a "create new character"!

The Doom guy would be in paradise.

He'd need a lot of ammo though - even with the Backpack powerup he wouldn't have enough. I also don't think the Wombies will drop shotgun ammo.

We might need to improvise.

We might need IDKFA

Well the BFG would certainly become the gift that keeps on giving. Or the chainsaw.

if Blizzard offered a $10 000 a month service that allowed someone to run around in a realm carrying a rocket launcher that could permanently delete characters or precious equipment, it would be so worth it. If they really wanted to be politically correct about it, they could restrict the rockets to only affecting gold farmers. would still be fun though.

Perhaps an option in the hack would be to turn about 5% of players into Cacodemons.

Something about Cacodemons that gives me that extra urge to keep blasting away. Not the Doom 3 Cacodemons, the original ones. The newer ones were only shadows of their former selves.

When I was in high school I played a lot of Doom/D2. I once had a dream that I was being stalked by a giant cyborg-cacodemon that shot rockets instead of, well, whatever they normally shoot at you. I mean this things was huge, like 50 feet in diameter.

I think I played too much Doom...

Actually, Blizzard has a "world event" in WoW right now that does turn you into a zombie. A kind of infection going around, sort of like Resident Evil. It's tied in with the whole Lich King thing.

Oh, and you respawn when you die in WoW. Even PVP realms. So it probably wouldn't phase many players, alot of people are zombieing it up for fun already.

Hmm... sounds just like the Undead Plague you could catch in game immediately after the 3.0.2 patch.

Unfortunately that event appears to be over... but it was quite fun watching countless people turn into zombies only to die as their own allies attacked them. Of course, the zombies always managed to infect many others causing the mayhem to continue.

Like I said during the event: Gimme a shotgun and a bunch of zombies and let the fun begin! ...BRAINS!....

After several attempts to eat my wife's brain she suggested I take a break from WoW.

I'm not sure how much health a Quake player has, but they seemed to go down fast in ETQW.

With that in mind, my Shadow Priest in WoW has about 10,000 health, and can dish out some serious damage, and would melt legions of Quake players if they were able to get in easily. You can't use your shotgun when I turn you into a chicken with my trinket, or perhaps I'd just mind control you and make you kill other Quake players. :)

All those fancy things won't do you a hill of beans good when you are turned into a Zombie! :P

You'll eat rocket launcher/Quake 2 Chaingun(spooled up at its max RPM, it is quite devestating) before you can even click on a fancy icon to take any defensive action. :)

Or, if we were feeling generous, we'd rail you from long range, well outside your spell effect area. The best part of being a quake player is silly tricks like mind control don't work - because our players are an extension of ourselves in the real world, and don't subscribe to gameworld character traits.

My best advice, just stand still while we circle strafe around you hopping like rabbits. ;)

(oh and ETQW doesn't count as Quake/Doom)
