Punch-Out franchise to return as well

Nintendo held a major press conference on Thursday at 1:30PM Tokyo time announcing new products such as the Nintendo DSi. As Nintendo has chosen to not attend this year’s Tokyo Game Show, several other major announcements were made during this press conference. One of those announcements was the ability to play games from SD memory cards. Nintendo also announced a new lineup of games as well.

As the event was a Japanese press only conference, Kotaku translated a live blog of the event from Famitsu where Nintendo's Satoru Iwata announced the fix for the Nintendo Wii's inability to play games from external memory storage. According to Iwata, Nintendo is going to make it possible to download games onto SD cards starting in Spring 2009. "We have to address the console's insufficient memory storage," said Iwata. This fix will apply only to WiiWare and Virtual Console games.

In addition to the Wii storage announcement, a number of new Wii games were announced at the press conference. The revival of the NES classic Punch-Out franchise was announced along with Another Code, Sin and Punishment 2, and Sangoku Musou 3 (Dynasty Warriors). It was also announced that Gamecube games will be re-released for the Nintendo Wii starting with Pikmin. The service will be called "Wii de Asobu Selection" (Play on Wii Selection).

Nintendo also plans to ship a short 3 minute movie called “Wii de Dekiru Koto” (What You Can Do With The Wii). The movie will show users how to easily connect to the internet. By no coincidence, Nintendo also announced it is putting special Wi-Fi adaptors for sale on the market.

There is a utility to do that, and it's been there since launch. However, it only lets you move one at a time, and isn't as easy as it should be. I haven't done it in a while so I can't recall where exactly it was, but it was in the memory manager or the channel manager or something.

This utility isn't very good for moving games from wii memory to SD card. For starters many games fail to copy properly.

Also, what we're going to be looking for is something that not only copies core game data, but then also points channel links to the SD card, and deletes the game from main wii system memory. A little more sophisticated than the builg in memory manager (as currently written).

Is it a homebrew utility though? Nintendo doing this makes it official so there's no legal grey zone. It's definitely a long time coming, especially if Nintendo wants to make bigger Wiiware games. 512mb of space isn't a lot. All Nintendo needs to do now is cut the price of the Wii to a more reasonable $199.99 to match the 360 Arcade.

No, it came with the wii... you can't PLAY the games from the SD card, but you can put them there for a while to make room for the ones you do want to play.
