Super Talent launches its MasterDrive OX, PX SSDs

Super Talent is bulking up its solid-state drive (SSD) family with new, third generation models. The company today announced that its new MasterDrive OX and PX SSDs feature a brand new multi-channel SATA-II controller for increased read/write speeds.

The new 2.5" MasterDrive OX drives employ multi-level cell (MLC) memory and feature read speeds of 150MB/sec and write speeds of 100MB/sec. The drives will be available in capacities of 32GB ($149), 64GB ($259), and 128GB ($419).

Super Talent also made updates to its single-level cell (SLC) SSDs with the new MasterDrive PX family. These drives will be available in capacities of 32GB ($499) or 64GB ($849) and are capable of 170MB/sec reads and 130MB/sec writes.

Interestingly, the MLC-based drives come with a paltry one-year warranty, while the SLC drives are backed by a more respectable three-year warranty.

"In this, our third generation of SATA SSDs, we’ve taken performance to incredible new heights, with sustained read and write speeds that will leave any hard disk drive in the dust," said Joe James, Super Talent Director of Marketing. "At the same time, our MasterDrive SSDs are among the most cost effective solid state storage solutions available."

The drives are expected to be available in the retail market later this week.

Drive Controller?

Hopefully these drives won't be using the JMicron controller. I'd like to finally see a decently priced SSD that can handle random R/W.

Well I don’t know, it’s not any SSD manufacturers fault if JMicros is messn up their hard drives !!!!111111eleven

I agree fully with you. If a bunch of low budget websites (compared to R&D of a moderately large tech company) can find obvious faults and pinpoint then, I would hope the fiasco with OCZ and others using that horrid chip don’t make such blatant mistakes again.

I mean, they are obviously targeting enthusiasts, I don’t know about a lot of you, but I'm pretty damn sure they knew about this and used us to beta test the market and their drive in general. Pretty low imo.

I've got the OCZ Core V1 and I'm fully satisfied with it.

On normal use, it's 90% of time faster than my previous SCSI 10krpm drives. I don't feel any drastic stutters. I'm on ICH5, with that chipset, it's even slower than it's supposed to be because it's SATA 1.

Stutter is an Intel driver problem. The main problem here is that Intel chipsets are very popular.

Intel driver issue? Where are you getting that info?

PS: If you feel any stutter (mouse freeze) thats horrible.

I wonder if your set up is why you don't see any stuttering? Do you have 3 or 4GB of RAM and your page file turned off? I would like to see some benches where someone compares 4GB of RAM and no page file against, 2 other setups. One with 4GB of RAM and Windows controls the page file and another with 2GB of RAM and 2GB page file. And then to make things really cool, and get the most out of the test, run 2 or 3 bench marks at the same time. Then this would really show who has the best SSD per category.
