iPod nano 4G Rendering  (Source: Engadget)

iPod 4G Renderings  (Source: iLounge)
4G iPod line expected to be announced at event

We haven't heard much from the Apple camp in respect to new products since it launched the iPhone 3G that is currently doing well in the marketplace. Apple is the number one brand in MP3 players with the iPod line sitting far above its competitors on the sales charts.

Rumors have been circulating for a while now that Apple would soon introduce new iPod models. Renderings have been surfacing showing the possible design of the new iPod nano and iPod touch players. Engadget has a rendering of the new iPod nano that is advertising some sort of screen protector for the device.

The 4G nano ditches the short, fat design that was not popular with the 3G nano and returns back to a tall, slim design much closer to the design of previous generation nano players. The 4G nano has a flat screen, but the player itself is rounded on the edges.

Renderings of a new iPod touch have surfaced as well that show it to be in a case very similar to that of the new iPhone 3G. The design change is really no surprise considering the old touch used the same chassis as the original iPhone. According to iLounge, the new iPod nano will measure 38.75mm x 90.75mm x 6.08mm. Those dimensions -- if accurate -- would make the 4G nano slightly taller and thinner than previous nanos.

The rendering also gives the supposed dimensions of the touch as well. The touch is reported to measure 111mm x 61.8mm x 8.4mm -- making it roughly the same size as the original iPod touch.

MacRumors reports that a September 9 press event from Apple has been confirmed. It is assumed the 4G iPod nano and 2G iPod touch will be introduced at this event. Other possible upcoming announcements include updated MacBook and MacBook pro systems.

MacRumors, however, believes that updates to the MacBook won’t come until October though.

I thought this was a joke when I first heard it.

Basically, over a week ago Microsoft said they were going to announce a new product 9/9/08. Apple fanboys got wound up saying that Microsoft was trying to spoil an Apple product launch, eventhough Apple made no plans to launch a new product...

Is the tail waging the dog here?

Well, with all due respect to them, it's going to take something pretty special for a Microsoft product launch to have much impact on one from Apple. I'm not trying to have a go at Microsoft but I think we all know which event will be reported more by the media. Certainly there won't be much of a dilemma for a tech reporter to decide which event they want to attend...

I would laugh if MS called it the zPhone

Once you get videos on there, 2gb is going to fill up fast.

2G = 2nd generation of the device
2G != 2Gb of storage space

Um, NOTHING is worse than being locked into iTunes.

Funny, but my iPod works fine without ITunes.

I guess I must have the special iTunesless edition.

Yes.. because an unsupported third party plugin is something for the masses..

Not that the zune is any better, as it also requires software, but don't make it out as though Apple does not try to force you to use itunes.

One thing is worst, and that's Quicktime. (Thank god for Quicktime Alternative).

And thank god for quicktime only being used nowadays only on apple's website. Losers!

That is still One website to much!

Silversound : I was baiting the mod trolls. Anything pro-apple is instantly downrated here. It is pretty hilarious. The Zune is a decent DAP by all accounts, but MS doesn't really get marketing (squirt, social, etc). Ipod still wins for overall experience though from the few that I have used.
I don't own either as I mostly listen to music at my desk. Is it confirmed that the touch has GPS? I <3 GPS.

New ipod touch got new features such as GPS....

Why on earth anyone would need GPS for their MP3 player is beyond me.

From getting lost while walking around in a music-filled haze?

I confess I once walked in front of a bus that way. Luckily it had good brakes :)

New ipod touch got new features such as GPS, what does zune have to offer in order to compete?
I don't know.. syncs via wireless, unlimited music downloads for a fixed monthly fee.. dvd quality video out...

vs.. gps on your ipod?

I love the new zune, but the stylings just fall a bit behind the ipod, and the fact that Apple has every accessory known to man (and for cheap) is something the zune just can't match.. A superior product feature wise? the ipod is not..

It all very much depends on what you find important but GPS, for me, is much more important. Wireless syncing is both slow and drains the battery (wired syncing not only does the job faster but also charges the battery), I have no interest at all in a subscription service, and I've never used Video Out on my iPod. My overall feeling about the Zune is that its attempts to differentiate itself from other players has resulted in a number of gimmicky features that aren't compelling enough. But, as I noted, it depends on what you find important and perhaps the gimmicks are important to some.

New ipod touch got new features such as GPS

Er...I think you might want to wait until Tuesday before declaring that. This is "rumor" and rumor has a nasty habit of being completely wrong, particularly when it comes to Apple product releases. Right now all we know is that the iPod Touch does NOT have GPS and to say that it will is wrong.

My comment had nothing to do with Zune.

Many believe that the announcement Microsoft is planning has to do with a revolutionary 'laserless' mouse.

check out the video here:

I'd love to fail if it means a 75% market share.
