Role Playing Game Tales of Vesperia Helps Boost Sales

Microsoft's Xbox 360 has outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 in Japan, helped by the popularity of the new role-playing game "Tales of Vesperia," an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Microsoft sold 24,962 Xbox 360 consoles in Japan in the week ended August 10, topping Sony's sales of 9,673 PS3s, according to a Media Create ranking. Both companies lagged behind Nintendo, which sold 38,506 Wii consoles and 60,434 Nintendo DS Lites:

Nintendo DS - 60,434
PSP - 58,501
Wii - 38,506
Xbox 360 - 24,962
PlayStation 3 - 9,673
PlayStation 2 - 8,503

Sales of the Xbox 360 nearly quadrupled compared with the previous week's sales, due to strong demand for the latest game in the "Tales Of" role-playing series developed by Bandai Namco. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have struggled against the overwhelming competition from the Wii, which is a hit in Japan and in many other countries, due to its ability to  appeal to non-traditional video game players.

Microsoft has struggled to make inroads into game-loving Japan, where the market has long been dominated by Sony and Nintendo. Analysts say the original Xbox failed in Japan due to a lack of games that appealed to local tastes. The key to making inroads in to the Japanese market may be role playing games considering the latest sales numbers and with Microsoft aggressively pursuing other RPG franchises, like Star Ocean and Final Fantasy, it will be interesting to see if there will be change in their fortunes. Bandai Namco plans to launch "Tales of Vesperia" in the United States on August 26.

Yes, the week of Blue Dragon's release the 360 outsold the PS3 as well, by a similar margin.

That being said, it still wasn't so much a case of the 360 selling particularly well in Japan as it has been the PS3 selling abysmally... perhaps Microsoft's observations about the Japanese not wanting an exceptionally large console (as they said about their poor Xbox sales in Japan) were correct after all.

The other interesting stat of note was the DS once again topping the PSP in sales... while the ratio between the two lifetime is still well in Nintendo's favor, the PSP had been outselling the DS week after week recently. It, like the 360, took a major title's release (in this case, the new Fire Emblem game) to change the status quo...

Yeah, about the PS3's abysmal sales.

From early december until the recent price cut, the PS3's world wide sales were higher than the xbox 360's. If you go based off of launch date, the PS3 was outselling what the 360 did by almost 2:1.

Note the "in Japan" part... yes, it's still outselling the 360 in Japan, but it's getting outsold in humiliating fashion by the Wii (LTD about a 3:1 margin). The PS3 is selling fairly well in the US, quite well in Europe...

...but in Japan it's been almost as absent as the 360 has been.

I've noticed that too (psp outselling DSD) for a few months now. I believe it's due to some good games that came out for the PSP in Japan helping to boost it's sales. Then again, DS had a few games too. Whatever the case I was glad to see the psp still going strong. I like the technology in it :) I have one but hardly ever play haha Play the DS more.
