Dell brings out a new 13" model for Back-to-School

Earlier today, DailyTech brought you news of Dell's new Studio Hybrid desktop PC. The stylish PC aims to take on the likes of Apple's Mac Mini and starts at $499.

The Studio Hybrid, however, isn't the only news coming out of Dell today. The Texas-based company also announced a new Inspiron notebook computer that will arrive just in time for the Back-to-School rush next month.

The Inspiron 13, as its name implies, features a 13" display (presumably 1280x800) and weighs in at just under five pounds. The notebook will come standard with touch-sensitive media keys, an 8-in-1 media reader, and a slot-loading DVD burner which is typically reserved for Dell's higher-priced notebooks.

The notebook will first be made available for consumers on August 3 in Wal-Mart stores. Those who wish to purchase the notebook online will have to wait until late August. Pricing for Dell's new 13" model will start at $699.

And just like that, all the $500+ netbooks are obsolete!

Is Dell still planning a $299 Atom/VIA-based netbook?

Most netbooks are closer to 2 pounds than 5... so rather a different class of machine wouldn't you say?

It's been covered time and time again, netbooks DO NOT compete in the same space as cheapy laptops... they sacrifice performance for high battery life (notably EEE 901 goes for 5-6hrs) and low weight, small size etc. I bet this cheapy machine as well as being much heavier is also a lot bigger, thicker and has a battery life that will last just long enough to login and see the battery critical warning...

I know which one I'd rather have... my EEE 901 slips in my bag great, lasts all day...

Really depends on what you are doing with your laptop/netbook. If I were lugging one around campus all day, I think I'd rather have one of the 8.9"-10" netbooks than this one. Though, if I could only afford to have one computer(most students), I think I'd spend the extra $150, and get this Inspiron 13 as it has much more functionality than a netbook.

I have an old Dell 700m, which I've successfully undervolted to 0.792V @ 600mhz / 0.972V @ 1.6ghz. It can double as an MP3 player for over 6 hours back when the battery was new as well as function for well over 4 hours as a typewriter and this is with a 12.1" screen.

Battery life is not a very compelling argument, however with the extended cell it weighs in at close to 5 pounds which is just slightly double that of a 901. I've been thinking about picking up something smaller and lighter, but 3-cell battery models have far inferior life and performance even when compared to a paltry 4 year old Centrino.
