GTA IV was the top game of April, though Nintendo ruled all once again in hardware

Lately, the NPD monthly console sales figures all start off the same way with Nintendo on top. The figures for April are no exception, with the Wii and DS planted solidly in first and second place.

The Wii sold a stunning 714,000 units, almost matching the 721,000 it did in March. On top of the still strong-selling Super Smash Bros. Brawl, April also had the release of Mario Kart Wii to add to the Nintendo mascot-fuelled software frenzy. The upcoming release of Wii Fit will only boost Wii sales even higher, if such a thing were possible.

“Wii sales were buoyed in part by the strong launch of Mario Kart Wii, which sold more than 1.1 million units,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s EVP of sales and marketing. “Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week.”

The DS sold 414,000 handhelds, well behind the 698,000 units it did in the month prior, but still well ahead of all the competitors.

Sony’s handheld took up third place once again with 192,000 sold – strange for a month where no PSP game appeared on the top ten best-selling games.

Surprisingly, Grand Theft Auto IV’s release at the end of the month didn’t seem to stir high-definition console sales as much as most were expecting. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sold roughly the same number of hardware.

Microsoft’s console was just ever so slightly ahead with 188,000 Xbox 360s sold, while the PlayStation 3 was right next to it with 187,100 sold. Both consoles sold fewer units than it did in the previous month, when the Xbox 360 at 262,000 units and PlayStation 3 selling 257,000.

Despite the slowing sales, Sony seemed pleased by the sales improvement over a year ago. “Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month. The proof is in the numbers and, in April, PlayStation 3 hardware sales experienced a 127% increase over April of last year,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA.

The PlayStation 2 was still alive with 124,400 sold, but also down from 216,000 units in March.

Without a doubt the biggest game of April, despite being released the last few days of the month, was Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 with 1.85 million copies sold. Mario Kart Wii took second place with an impressive 1.12 million. PlayStation 3 owners also bought 1 million of Grand Theft Auto IV to push that version to third place.

This, I'm sure, is a dumb question, but I googled "What is video game popup?" and I am pretty sure that I did not find the answer I was looking for. What exactly is popup wrt video games??

I think what they are talking about is "HD POP", not sure if you have an HD TV or not, but basically well done HD encodes will feel like they're poping up out of the screen... Or more accuratly give you a very good 3D feel, as if you're watching the movie through a picture window. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban does this effectivly durring the quiddich match.

As far as AA, I think the 360 has a better GPU there for it would have superior AA.... Or at least that is what would make sense.

Its not that the GPU is better in terms of power, its that for any game regardless of how the dev codes it, 4X AA is automatically added to all 360 games without taking a performance hit. Programmers then have the option of adding even more AA if they so choose. So when someone tries to tell me the PS3 version has better AI, I really find it hard to believe, as it would take twice the work to implement it.

Who knows, could be R* putting more work into the PS3 version to see if it will sell better than the 360 version or something sort of like the several experiments waner did with hd dvd/bluray... If so I think it's highly unlikely R* will be considering any sort of PS exclusivity any time soon. Assuming they put the effort in, then it's all that effort only to see the 360 version murder PS3 sales anyway.

As I said, I very much doubt it, Rockstar had to delay GTAIV just because it was taking longer to finish the PS3 version. The chances that not only did the programmers add 4x AA to match what the 360 does without coding, but went over and beyond when they were already rushing to release their product is very, very small. PS3 owners can wish it, but I very much doubt it is true.

"Popup" as far as I'm aware, is when objects suddenly appear (in your immediate field of view/area of focus) prior to this a rather odd empty space is often present which obviously shouldn't be there (if something no being there can be somewhere???) making the scene or action appear unrealistic.

As FITCam says, it usual happens in fast moving parts of a game but can also happen quite often when the scene or game space is loading.

As for the rest of my prev post, I was simply passing on a very brief synopsis of the reviews I have read.

All in all, both games are the same, unless you're able to play them both right next to each other I doubt if you will be seriously upset with either choice, apart from realising that all the AA and lighting effects in the world don't change the fact that GTA4 is pretty much the same as all the other GTA games that you've played and nothing new really.

They should bring back the line of Hari Christnas who you got a bonus for running them all over in 1 "spree", the best part of the original top down GTA games :)
