GTA IV was the top game of April, though Nintendo ruled all once again in hardware

Lately, the NPD monthly console sales figures all start off the same way with Nintendo on top. The figures for April are no exception, with the Wii and DS planted solidly in first and second place.

The Wii sold a stunning 714,000 units, almost matching the 721,000 it did in March. On top of the still strong-selling Super Smash Bros. Brawl, April also had the release of Mario Kart Wii to add to the Nintendo mascot-fuelled software frenzy. The upcoming release of Wii Fit will only boost Wii sales even higher, if such a thing were possible.

“Wii sales were buoyed in part by the strong launch of Mario Kart Wii, which sold more than 1.1 million units,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s EVP of sales and marketing. “Our belief in appealing to a broad, diverse audience of players continues to resonate with consumers, and we look forward to continuing our outreach to an expanded audience with the launch of Wii Fit next week.”

The DS sold 414,000 handhelds, well behind the 698,000 units it did in the month prior, but still well ahead of all the competitors.

Sony’s handheld took up third place once again with 192,000 sold – strange for a month where no PSP game appeared on the top ten best-selling games.

Surprisingly, Grand Theft Auto IV’s release at the end of the month didn’t seem to stir high-definition console sales as much as most were expecting. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sold roughly the same number of hardware.

Microsoft’s console was just ever so slightly ahead with 188,000 Xbox 360s sold, while the PlayStation 3 was right next to it with 187,100 sold. Both consoles sold fewer units than it did in the previous month, when the Xbox 360 at 262,000 units and PlayStation 3 selling 257,000.

Despite the slowing sales, Sony seemed pleased by the sales improvement over a year ago. “Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month. The proof is in the numbers and, in April, PlayStation 3 hardware sales experienced a 127% increase over April of last year,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA.

The PlayStation 2 was still alive with 124,400 sold, but also down from 216,000 units in March.

Without a doubt the biggest game of April, despite being released the last few days of the month, was Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 with 1.85 million copies sold. Mario Kart Wii took second place with an impressive 1.12 million. PlayStation 3 owners also bought 1 million of Grand Theft Auto IV to push that version to third place.

It says the hardware sales were the same, not the game sales. So yes you read it wrong.

I kind of mentally connected GTA and 360 and PS3 being tied for sales when I first glanced at the title. If sony could have pulled that off it would have been great for them... As it is it just further hammer's home sony's 3rd placeness... And while I know not every PS3 gamer beleived this, there were a few hard core fans out there talking this up like GTA was going to be the PS3 miricle game, like people would just go run out and buy up PS3's left and right with the GTA launch and the 360 would finally be left in the dust.

Clearly, this didn't happen.

the us is the land of the 360, in europe gta4 is selling better on ps3 than on 360, and there its also selling quite a few consoles (especially ps3s).

Is the US really "the land of the 360" or the land less likely to have prejudice against microsoft? MS is hardly very popular in Europe, they really are the company you love to hate particularly there. In Asia, the platform still lacks enough compelling content for the market.

I'm guessing that the US is where the 360 has the most equal footing. It has both the content that western gamers enjoy, and doesn't have to content with as much "ZOMG YOUR GOING TO BUY M$ HARDWARE??"... Thus, the 360 has a massive sales lead due largely yes, to the fact that it was released earlier...

But not in the sense that many think, i.e. well they just had longer to sell hardware, that's only part of the eq. It really is the larger game library. It just has a wider variaty than the PS3.

Anyway, I'm already pretty sure this post is going to get voted to -1, but regardless I will say that I think the PS3 is a fine console and that it's on my future purchases list. And the fact that the PS3 has manged to come back from absolutly abysmal sales performace to really giving MS a run for their money clearly speaks of the quality of the hardware.

atm PS3 and 360 sales in us seem to be closely tied and i guess that will stay till next pricedrop. major releases on one or other console will give small spikes but overall they will probably sell about same as before.

in europe ps3 seems to gain more and more advantages, in some contries there they allready have more consoles sold than 360.
not sure why 360 did not get as much a starting advantage there than it had in us, it might really be the microsoft is bad thing. but i highly doubt that thats all, most people still use windows, and microsoft keyboards and mouses sell good here too.

At least looking at it from this side of the pond, it seems clear that there's a much greater linux push over in Europe than there ever would be here. I can guess at many reasons for that, everything from microsoft being persived as the evil corperation and Linux being persived as the great liberator etc... Anyway, a lot of the computing news making it across the pond here is decidedly anti-microsoft, particularly anything to do with EU antitrust (yikes will anything make them happy?). Perhaps my view is just colored, but there's a strong sense of that.

Annnyway, the 360 situation over here really makes a lot more sense to me. It was released first, it has more games and stole a great number of former exclusives (major ones i.e. Guitar Hero, GTA, Assasins Creed) from the playstation platform really negating a lot of the reason some might have had to buy a PS3. For instance take all those "PS2" owners that were talked about around the GTA launch, how they were supposed to buy up PS3's enmass and murder the 360.. That didn't happen, why? Maybe the fact that some of them might already own 360's and can just buy GTA for that kind of killed that buzz.

End result? The PS3 might be one heck of a console (it truely is, no denying) but it needs huge exclusives. I see MSG being a great seller for the platform. The one that really has me wanting a PS3 is God of War.

Bull$hit! Quality of the hardware what??

The hardware blows as the same game when converted or created with an Xbox360 SDK would have BETTER graphics and run a little faster.

Clearly, it is the GAME ITSELF and the Software Developer that sells the game and therefore causes console sales to increase.

If a console was created and marketed but there were no games for it.. it would not sell. When a console IS made, software developers learn the product well, get an SDK and either run with archived plans, or go to the drawing board to make one. But if the games suck, nobody will buy consoles.

People bought original Xbox's because they HAD to play Halo. After playing it at a friends house way too many times, you had to have one. Blood wake? interesting but wouldnt make me buy the console. Other games? Fusion Frenzy? C'mon that came free. Any other great titles at launch? I don't remember, because everyone had tunnel vision aboard the Pillar of Autumn.

I think you're being overly harsh here. Whilst the EU imposed punitive fines on MS for anti competitive practice (in its esteemed technical opionion...) don't take this to mean that Europe (including the UK) are not big supporters of MS and that we all push Linux. Nothing could be further from the truth! I've never worked for an organisation in the UK that uses Linux to a big degree and on the desktop you'd have to search very far to find something not based on MS for similar reasons to the US, namely supportability. Mind you we are talking the UK here and we try and do the exact opposite of the EU on principle generally.

Games on the 360 seem more targetted at stinking Gaijin...ummm I mean western gamers to me who was raised on a diet of seminal japanese games :) than Sony's and Nintendo's consoles. I think this follows from the 360 taking alot of PC content from the PC than any other reason. Mind you Nintendo seems to be eschewing their traditional market more and more these days. Makes me sad...

No console noise while playing. Check.
Slightly better graphics according to reviews. Check.
No monthly fee to play it online. Check.

Hmm, I wonder which version is the best to get? :P

Wow, that's funny... When I rented it for 360 on my system I had no console noise, excellent graphics and since I don't play online I didn't pay a fee... Though now that you mention online play nearly every post I've seen by someone who made that one of their major issues went with the 360 version of the game... "Far superior online play experience, check" :P

The 360 with its low-density media, high speed dvd drive is the loudest console in history, and you claim it has no noise? You're fruit loops.

And why is the online play $5 a month better than the PS3? Because you can hear every sh%t talking eleven year old in the server? Yeah, I'm there dude. Sign me up for that far superior pay-to-play experience.

I claim that my console has so little noise that unless I'm playing with no sound I don't hear it... That's a resounding there might as well be no noise...

Why is paying $5 better? Because you're trying to make it sound like the playstation offers online gamers that XBL does, this is absolutly not the case. In game xbm for starters? I'm sorry but one area where the PS3 is decidedly weaker is in online gameing.

I find the Xbox 360's drive noisy, but that is if I only concentrate on the sound, if I am concentrating on the game, I really don't hear the noise, if anything it's about as noisy as my VHS player and/or my computers DVD burner, nothing to get stressed over, probably doesn't help that the console sits fairly close to me either, And it is seriously less noisy than my first gen PS1 and PS2 and Xbox.

I haven't had a shot at multi-player gaming yet on the 360, so I can't really comment on it.

But I -do- love the fact it plays all my music and DivX files!

It's better because it's a better organized environment. There is more downloadable content for games (which make your $60 game last even longer). There are more serious people online. It keeps track of friends across games and statistics of your in game activities. And yes you can hear 12 year olds AS WELL AS your friends. The idea of playing COD4 without being able to talk with team members sounds flat out miserable.

It's not even a question of whether or not XBOX Live is better than whatever PS3 calls their online service now. The only downfall is that you have to pay for it. But you get what you pay for. You pay nothing to be online with PS3 don't expect anything good.

THEY ARE ALL NOISY!! HAve you ever tried to watch a BR movie on the PS3. When that CPU fan gets going I have to crank the Dolby 7.1 all the way up to drown it out. They all make noise but I can tell you when my 360 starts making noise it is nowhere near as bad as that damned PS3 fan noise, which Sony doesn't care about since I've called customer support about 5 times. At least my friend called MS about the 360 making noise and they replaced his and now he's back to normal.

Wow you must really have sensitive ears, I watch blu-ray and dvds on my ps3 and don't have to crank my surround system.

Do you have an amplifier attached to the fan?

By steve1014 on 5/16/2008 12:05:38 PM , Rating: 2
Maybe I was exaggerating a bit when I said crank it up but I do have to turn it up to drown it out. It used to be A LOT worse but i think some of the firmware updates might have had something to do with calming it down.

Unless I mute the sound, I don't hear my console. Period.

And I essentially pay $3.30 a month for Xbox Live. I can live with that. If $45 for 13 months of play breaks the bank for you, the 360 or PS3 probably isn't for you anyway.

And I typically play with my friends. Not the average public.

I could not notice the difference in graphics when directly compared. I was going to get the PS3 version as I heard they had to compress textures on the 360 version to fit it on a DVD9. Yet when I personally compared the two, I could not call one better than the other.

In the end, I have always found the xbox live experience much better than the PS Network, just as with Call of Duty 4, I made the decision if the game is the same, I will jump for the best online experience. Once again in this case, I think the 360 version has the slight advantage in my opinion. The PS network still has some major issues in regard to latencies during gameplay in various games which I just can't stand.

Honestly if I had both I'd get the 360 version just for the online play. Unless you have a lot of friends to invite yourself it can be tough getting a big game going on PSN, just isn't as many players as XBL.

As for noise, with temps in the 100s yesterday and still 95 at 9pm my PS3's fan was howling like I've never heard it. I actually didn't hear it until after I turned off the game - that is I didn't hear it during all the gunfire and explosions and music... but yeah it can get loud if it gets hot. Fortuntately it almost never gets that hot..

PS3 freezing up in GTA4. Check
Slightly better graphics filled with so many jaggies you can't tell. Check
Laggy crappy barely populated online play. Check.

The first one happens on both consoles. Check
Second one is happening on (my) Xbox, didn't notice on PS3. Check
Third one - you are half right. Check mate :)
