Wii gets downloadable original games; Final Fantasy among the first

Nintendo today launched in North America its own infrastructure for downloadable original games, called WiiWare.

Wii owners with Internet-enabled consoles will be able to download new games priced between 500 to 1500 Wii Points ($5 to $15). Nintendo advertises that WiiWare provides a platform for game developers that is relatively inexpensive, allowing for “original ideas in the most democratic environment in industry history.”

“WiiWare is to the video game industry what independent films are to Hollywood,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing. “WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past - and the future.”

Six WiiWare titles are presently available for download, including Final Fantasy Chronicles: My Life as a King, which challenges player to rebuild a kingdom as a young king. Other WiiWare launch titles, all of which are 1000 points or under, include LostWinds, Defend Your Castle, Pop, V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack and TV Show King.

Players may buy WiiWare games by browsing to the appropriate section in the Wii Shop Channel and spending Wii Points to download a specific title. Wii Points may be purchased directly from the Wii Shop through the use of a credit card, or they can be bought in the form of coded cards from retailers.

I make enough money such that ~gasp~

I can afford to have all of them. Does this mean that I am above petty squables between consoles, yep. These arguements are really only relevant for people who can only afford one system. Which is unfortunate because, I see inherent value in all of the systems.

Wii - brings teh chickz. If you play mariokart they will come.

Xbox - is for Achievement points. and cod4 online.

Ps3 - is for blueray

And seriously that is the breakdown. Ps3 is really nice and all but lately its been relegated to blueray status /shrug truth hurts. I try to play for the games and not really the systems and in order to do that I had to have all of them.

I too own all three, although only reason I bought the Wii was for my 10 year old daughter.

I am techie, so other than spending some nice time playing with my youngin, the Wii doesn't impress me in the least, & that shaking controller that many love, well, I am a traditionalist & I am fine with a stndard controller with vibration.

I can't even play many Wii games with the wand, & I would prefer if the Wii gave gamers like me the option of using our standard controller or Gamecube controller to play some of the Wii games like Mario Galaxy or Metroid of which I can't even play with Wii controller.

I have been very impressed with both the 360 & PS3 as my genres are racers, fighters, action, shooters, intense games & these consoles are where my gaming takes place, so although I think I am above all these petty arguments, I understand where gamers are coming from on all 3 sides of the fence.

It's good to see Nintendo back on top, but the Wii might be the worst Nintendo console I have owned as I own ever Nintendo console & all of them have games I like, other than the Wii.

Your statements actually doesn't make sense to me. I'm an engineer and I love designs but I'm a retrogamer most of time. While I do like the old style controls I also appreciate the advances in motion sensing devices like the Wii. It's nice, accurate enough and fun when you get use to them. And if I remember correctly systems will innovate the controls as they themselves change. And at this point now we have the Wii with this very unique and fun control design. I wouldn't blame it on the design but rather your taste. The argument of past control designs being smarter, better, etc is irrelevant as they are mostly subjective.

So what do you mean when you refer to yourself as a techie? For me, I look for the design innovation. I like gadgets, I like efficient designs, I like pleasing designs, I like to buy them, take them apart, study them and sometimes even try to reprogram them or copy the design for fun. I love the specs of the ps3 but I'm not going to buy one (like you) if there are no games I enjoy playing. The xbox is meh due to some design issues..heat being one of them ><!

I like the specs on the ps3 and xbox and the games are graphically appealing but I haven't found a game that can keep my attention for more than 20mins. Eye candy can only go so far for me. When I play the Wii and start to think about how the graphics could be better I find myself being lost in the actually gameplay. This I believe is the difference for me.

I agree whole heartedly... The average PS3/360 fan boy doesn't realize that there's more to next generation technical advancement than just prettier graphics. IMHO speaking in terms of control systems the PS/360 have both been left far in the dust by the Wii, which is one of the major reasons why it dominates this generation.

The funny thing is that Microsoft understands this better than the average 360 (and PS3) fanboy... Just look at their recent and upcoming stradegies... Cheaper price points, greater focus on family fun and quick gratifying game play, rumored Wii like motion controler...

It's imple, I like the wii for family gaming, PS3 Xbox 360 for my main gaming, & online play. It's as simple as that.
