Iron Man had no trouble with its targeted audience this past weekend.

The phrase uttered by Iron Man executives this past weekend to each other was likely "crisis averted". Some executives responsible for the movie Iron Man -- which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow -- expressed concerns that Grand Theft Auto IV would seriously erode the movie's opening weekend.

It appears that the Iron Man executives had little to fear when the final box office tallies came in yesterday. The movie brought in $100.7M over the weekend -- the heady tally makes it the second highest gross for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man and the tenth highest grossing movie of all time. Iron Man' returns were boosted by it showing in an impressive 4,105 theaters.

"We could not have hoped for a better way for Marvel Studios to blast off," said Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel.

The strong showing by Iron Man in theaters reinforces the fact that big-budget Hollywood movies can still draw in an audience despite high ticket prices and a weakened economy. The results also echoed Marvel Studios president of marketing Geoff Ammer's comments last week. "The two properties can co-exist in the marketplace," said Ammer on April 27. "We believe that moviegoers will make going to see Iron Man part of their weekend plans."

For its part, Grand Theft Auto IV has pulled in record numbers of its own. Although final U.S. figures have yet to be released, estimates peg that the game will have an opening week of roughly $400M -- this would surpass the $300M high watermark set by Halo 3 in 2007.

In the UK alone, ChartTrak says that combined first-day sales for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto totaled 609,000 making it the fastest selling game in the UK.

The question was if the public will mak ea choice to attend or not Iron Man because of GTA. I watched the movie, spectacular effects, Gwinet looks so atractive :), but in general a lot of political propaganda and the feeling of something uncompleted. For that said, Star Wars was way more sophisticated as a storiline, yet still childish.

What I would say is IF I had to choose between GTA4 and Iron Man, because of money or time restriction, I would've chosen the GTA4.

Yes, I was a bit surprised to find such a blatant anti-"military-industrial complex" message in the film, especially since Marvel itself produced it, rather than the usual Hollywood suspects. Was that a feature of the underlying comic, or was it injected after the fact?

What else is new man ? Hell most of the political BS in the new Star Wars trilogy was some lame attempt at an allegory to current politics. If Sci Fi isn't safe from these wacko's what is ?

Movies would be SOOOOO much better if they would try to entertain us without constantly injecting their left wing viewpoint into totally unrelated plots. I didn't read the Iron Man comics, but I'm pretty sure it didn't have some pro terrorist middle eastern anti American/capitalist storyline.

Iron Man was a good movie. But the constant bombardment of heavy handed political messages has left a bad taste in my mouth. Or maybe its just a bad attempt at irony, " oh god the weapons I helped build are actually killing innocent people of course, and a bomb with my name on it is the reason I have shrapnel in my chest and walk around with a glowing reactor / magnet drilled into my ribs. Now I am going to stop ( insert politically motivated passable bad guys ) because I have seen the error in my foolish capitalist pro-American ways "

I'm hoping Iron Man was the story, and Iron Man 2 will be the ACTION.
