Sony announces PlayStation 3 packed with Grand Theft Auto IV

Along with Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the biggest titles yet for PlayStation 3 – the only difference with MGS4, of course, is that GTA IV isn’t a platform exclusive. But that’s not going to stop Sony from treating GTA IV as one of its very own, and creating a new system bundle around the highly-anticipated title.

Announced today by both Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Australia is an official Grand Theft Auto IV bundle that will pack the game in along with the 40GB PlayStation 3 model. “We are delighted to offer the millions of PS3 and GTA fans the ultimate gaming package,” said David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Unfortunately for those hoping to get the latest DualShock 3 controller model with the new bundle, Sony indicated that the GTA IV bundle will include the outgoing SIXAXIS controller only. Such news may be the most disappointing for Australian gamers, who will have to purchase the DualShock 3 controller separately for a mindboggling AUD$99 (USD$92) when it releases this week. Gamers in Europe have yet to hear of an official launch date for their rumbling controllers.

The Grand Theft Auto IV PlayStation 3 bundle will retail in Europe at €439 (USD$696) and in Australia for AUD$749.95 (USD$715).

Gamers also considering paying the premium for the Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition game package will want an early sneak-peek of the game from an unknown retailer.

Actually, MS has announced that there is a now a 360 bundle also available in parts of Europe. Still don't think it's doing as good as the PS3 though. Many interviews with Rockstar devs on the net have said that the 360 version suffers from framerate stuttering and users should choose the "optional Install" of the game. The dev also said that the PS3 graphics processing, renders the game a lot smoother and that they had to extremely compress the graphics on the 360 due to such a small storage medium. They also said that MS has a "big problem" on their hands because of this, because the games of this gen will only get larger. Don't hate the messenger.

I'm glad to hear that the 360 features an optional install. Personally I'd be happy with games allowing you to completely install the game on the hard drive if you chose to. I've got an Elite with a practically empty hard drive.

So I'll be doing the install. If only Mass Effect had offered it.

Some problems with that...

1 - Many 360s come without a Hard Drive. It becomes the LCD of the entire line... somewhat.

2 - Most 360s are not Elite models, so the base models - even the special Edition HALO 360 ONLY - ONLY come with a stupid 20GB HD. Once you include the standard software, update files over the years... how normal user usage, how much is typically left on the drive? 5GB? 10GB?

PS3 owners (I have not bought one yet, but GTA4 maybe the title that does) for almost a year had 40GB as standard. And unlike M$ - they don't need to spend $100 for a 20GB HD or almost $200 for a 120GB HD... they simply buy a HD off the shelf, like a 320GB 5400RPM for $140 or for top performance, spend $160 for a 200GB 7200RPM 2.5" drive. Any of these will out store, out price and out perform Xbox's 4200rpm little thingy.

Curious - what else is in the bundle... other than a different box and game. (We would have thought the HALO Xbox360 would at lest INCLUDE the game or something) for the $400 price.

Personally, I'd want a gun-metal Grey PS3 - but without the game.

A coworker of mine with the Premium model (so 20GB hard drive) who plays vastly more games than me(so his hard drive is littered with saves and what not) has over 13GB of space left.

The only people who will have a problem is those who download lots of videos.

And this was not an argument about who's hard drive model is better. Yes, I wish all 360s had come standard with a hard drive. Yes I wish they let you buy your own drives to upgrade your storage space. But my point was that I'm just glad that for those of us that do have a hard drive, it will be utilized for a game like this.

And hopefully, the next time around, Microsoft will realize that every console needs a hard drive as they did in the first generation Xbox. Hell they don't even necessarily need to put a hard drive in it. Just put 2-4GB of flash memory storage in the console to buffer game data on.

For someone like me though, I'll never even come close to filling up my 120GB drive. All my video is on my video server. I bought the Elite for the black color (matches my entertainment equipment) and the HDMI (since the newer premium wasn't out yet).

I just wonder will it be similar to Capcoms decision with games like Devil May Cry. The added cache to the Hard Drive reduces load times between levels by several seconds.

In a game like GTA with such open-world gameplay, I wonder how much of a difference this install will make between the 360 and PS3 version.

Also I wonder how much of a difference, performance wise (frames, glitches, etc), the install will help with.
