Clovertown, quad-core CPU; two socket system demonstration
Quad-core CPUs are very close to maturity and may arrive sooner than expected

Intel shows a demonstration of its next generation quad-core processor, codenamed Clovertown with a multi-threaded benchmark (Cinebench). The CPU is Intel's first quad-core processor and is running on a dual-socket board. Notice in the screenshot that Windows is detecting 8 cores.

AMD previously spoke that it is also working on its own next-generation quad-core processor and hints at a release sometime later this year.

Its not 8 Cores... Its 4 Cores with Hyper Threading. When dealing with HT Windows displayes a seperate Performance Display. A.K.A. 1CPU + HT = 2 CPU displays/ 2Cores + HT = 4 CPU displays/ etc.

Accroding to the information this is 8 cores, two four core chips. It says this is a demo of a quad core chip - two sockets.

Hyperthreading isn't active in Clovertown...nor would you want it to be.

This is incorrect. The newer Xeon processors currently available work like this (dual core with Hyper Threading = 4 processing threads per processor), but the processors which this article is referring to are true quad core processors. The MB being run is dual socket, so you see 2x quad core processors = 8 processing cores. Add Hyper Threading and you'd get 16 processing threads from Windows (8 cores, 8 virtual cores). I wonder if task manager would crash if you did that :-).

Not at all, considering I've been using 16-core Windows machines for several years now.

No, it's actually just a static screenshot.

All products demo'ed at IDF today are actually powered by AMD processors.

A but I am one a person that remembers shows like this done by intel all the time. I rememeber when they demoed 1 GHz, 1.5 GHz PIIIs and a 5GHz P4. They showed a small box and demo-ed that it was working, while in reality they were using big huge Nitrogen coolers in the back to get it to run in that state. Infact I think the 5GHz was northwood and not even a presscott. It would be so much easier for them to show a dual CPU Dual core machine with hyperthreading then to demo a chip that is a year or 2 way from seeing the light of day.

Intel stated that those processors were overclocked. You think you're the only one that realized they were liquid/nitrogen cooled?
