NVIDIA gives up a few more mouth watering details on mobile HD platform

Back in February, DailyTech brought news of NVIDIA's upcoming mobile video and graphics processor, not for laptops but for smaller, hand-held devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, etc. The APX 2500 HD video and graphics processing platform looked interesting on paper and looked even better in screen shots and demo videos with clean 3D rendering and silky smooth interface animations.

A recent product briefing with NVIDIA revealed a few more tidbits regarding the APX 2500 mobile processing platform including a power consumption of 50 mW which allows the chip to run up to 10 hours with a single battery charge. This makes the APX 2500 an ideal solution for mobile phones, PDAs, and GPS devices. In fact, NVIDIA states that the first devices to implement the APX 2500 processor will be GPS devices as early as this year. Implementation of the APX 2500 in mobile phones will soon follow.

According to NVIDIA, the APX 2500 is a single chip solution which has a package slightly smaller than a dime. The chip will include an ARM11 MP core with a maximum clock speed of 750MHz, a GeForce class GPU, a high-definition audio and video processor, memory, and IO system and an image signal processor all in the same package. Though the chip is no larger than a dime, NVIDIA states the APX 2500 is capable of running high-definition video flawlessly through HDMI 1.2 with additional dual display capabilities to view video on both the device and a high-definition display.

The APX 2500 is stated to deliver high-definition video up to 720p resolution in H.264, MPEG-4, and VC-1 formats. The GeForce GPU is capable of producing 3D graphics with features such as programmable pixel shaders and vertex & lighting, as well as coverage sampled anti-aliasing.

With such a low power requirement and a small form factor, many are skeptical of the APX 2500's performance, however, demos have already shown what the chip can do as far as 3D rendering and with a little creativity, product makers should be able to implement all of the goodies into future products utilizing this mobile processing platform.

Please let it be true. Also ditch the Useless Media Disc (TM) or let us burn UMDs.

I'd like to see them ditch game media altogether, and have some decent storage space with a downloadable Steam-like format for games. A combination of WiFi and High Speed Cellular Broadband like the iPhone, and Sony would definitely have a winner.

Having to carry around game media is pretty lousy, usually limiting what one could take on a trip. Doing the above would give you everything in the palm of your hand, as cliche as it sounds.

Yes but that would mean either

a) The device itself would require a fair sized hard drive inside the device itself to store an adequate number of games. Which not only adds cost but also weigh and size to the device.

b) Only enough space for one or two games meaning when you want to change games you have to download a new game. And considering PSP games are currently 2.1GB(correct?), even over the fastest connections available to consumers today, thats going to take 30 minutes to hours to download.

And even if you have the fair sized hard drive you still have to download new games whenever they're released or when it fills up and you want to swap in new games.

No using a flash based storage medium is the logical choice. Its cheap to produce. It's small. It requires a smaller footprint in the device than a disc. And it uses less power.

They could put 16 or 32GB of flash memory in it. That would be adequate to have several games at the same time, and games you have bought but not played in a while could be deleted and redownloaded when needed (like Steam). Even 8GB would be adequate if there was an option for an SD card, although Sony would probably force us to use Memory sticks...

Flash is cheap and getting cheaper!

I'm so damn sick of people who are so in love with STEAM medialess content. wait until the day your device dies, or you want to play it 4+ years down the road for old time sake. Then you will understand why this is the worst idea since Divx. (Not the codec the disk.) It will be a cold day in hell when I give up media based games\movies Music less so since they are starting to not put DRM on it and I can back it up and move it around. The rest. Fuck the industry. If it was up to them we would all be paying every time we played a game.

I just redownloaded HL2 almost 4 years later using steam noting could be easer. No extra fees noting. I dont understand where the hate comes from it is so much easer than disk. Faster too with high speed internet. Please search for some other obscure reason to hate one of the best thing about PC games right now. Those just are not valid here. I often wait for games to come out on steam now to avoid the hassle of the disks.
