The DualShock 3 is the PlayStation 3 controller of the future

Force feedback vibration controllers are nearly within the grasp of North American PlayStation 3 gamers. Announced at last year’s Tokyo Games Show, the DualShock 3 released November 11 in Japan. Gamers elsewhere resorted to import solutions in order to experience the good vibrations not felt since the PlayStation 2 days.

The DualShock 3 will hit U.S. retail on April 15, near the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which supports rumble feedback. SCEA announced in February that the DualShock 3 will retail at $54.99, or $5 more than the current SIXAXIS controller.

Although Sony appears to have little problem maintaining multiple different SKUs for its consoles, it has no intention of keeping two controller models on the market. Speaking to MTV, a Sony representative said, “Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it’s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).”

One interesting thing to take away from the Sony statement is that a new 40GB PS3 console package will be on its way perhaps as soon as summer. As the current 40GB model includes a SIXAXIS controller, Sony will have to at the very least revise its current bundle to incorporate the newer DualShock 3.

The DualShock 3 controller will be officially a part of new consoles this June, with the introduction of the Metal Gear Solid 4 package which will include the game, 80GB PlayStation 3 and controller.

4/3/08 Update: Gamers are reporting that that local retailers, such as GameStop and Best Buy, have begun receiving early shipments of DualShock 3 controllers and are permitted to sell immediately.

No its more from them saying "rumble isn't important and no one wants it". If they had simply said "We are not legally able to produce a controller with rumble" it would have been fine. But they acted like it was some last gen feature that no one wanted.

Then they tried to make the case that because of the tilt controls, rumble wouldn't work with the controller. Nintendo showed they were lying there too.

Now they're like "HEY! We've got this amazing new controller with rumble! Come rebuy all your controllers again to get it."

That's why people are pissed. Because first we were told we didn't want it or need it, then that it wasn't possible, and now that its a new feature.

And ppl would still be pissed even if they didn't say anything about it. We live in a society where ppl just complain over the dumbest things. 6 bit vs 8 bit monitors on Apple anyone?

Actually that is a big thing. A lot of graphics professionals use Macs and need colors to be reproduced accurately. A 6-bit vs. 8-bit panel is a big deal to them. Now they're not lying that it can display millions of colors. They're just using tricks to get it to do it instead of the monitor actually being able to do it natively.

Advanced dithering will take care of that. As there wasn't a massive outcry, then it wasn't a massive problem.

They got a wireless, motion sensitive controller instead that many CHOSE to buy. But Sony listened to their customers and has made the vitally important rumble feature available for those that would die without it. But that doesn't make the Six Axis's unusable. Those that bought now have a choice. And I am sure there would be those that would compalin had there never been Rumble controllers. And there are also after market controllers by Logitech.

This sounds just like the same thing about BD Live and how people complained about that. Some people will never be satisfied.
