The DualShock 3 is the PlayStation 3 controller of the future

Force feedback vibration controllers are nearly within the grasp of North American PlayStation 3 gamers. Announced at last year’s Tokyo Games Show, the DualShock 3 released November 11 in Japan. Gamers elsewhere resorted to import solutions in order to experience the good vibrations not felt since the PlayStation 2 days.

The DualShock 3 will hit U.S. retail on April 15, near the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which supports rumble feedback. SCEA announced in February that the DualShock 3 will retail at $54.99, or $5 more than the current SIXAXIS controller.

Although Sony appears to have little problem maintaining multiple different SKUs for its consoles, it has no intention of keeping two controller models on the market. Speaking to MTV, a Sony representative said, “Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it’s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).”

One interesting thing to take away from the Sony statement is that a new 40GB PS3 console package will be on its way perhaps as soon as summer. As the current 40GB model includes a SIXAXIS controller, Sony will have to at the very least revise its current bundle to incorporate the newer DualShock 3.

The DualShock 3 controller will be officially a part of new consoles this June, with the introduction of the Metal Gear Solid 4 package which will include the game, 80GB PlayStation 3 and controller.

4/3/08 Update: Gamers are reporting that that local retailers, such as GameStop and Best Buy, have begun receiving early shipments of DualShock 3 controllers and are permitted to sell immediately.

Only Sony could put out a product that they knew no one wanted, wait a year to fix the blunder and still find a way to make a tidy profit on it. Thanks for continually buying into the crap fanboys.

And only Microsoft could put out an inferior product with major bugs and over a 30% failure rate, release new versions that don't fix the problems and still capture huge market share just because it came out earlier and has more software titles available. Oh wait, that's pretty much been the Microsoft strategy since day one.

My personal irony is that I have had a 360 for over a year now and after 5 weeks my PS3 packed it in and can't read discs.

Oh well no BD for poo.

Congratulations. You have bad luck. You are part of the estimated 0.2% of those with a defective PS3. Much better than the old 33% of Xbox 360 users.

SquareTrade currently estimates the Xbox 360 at 16.4% failure rate. Course this is combining all models of 360, old or new. Couldn't find any studies into just the Falcon.

I agree.

I like both consoles. They both have their plusses.

The build quality of the 360 is just plain terrible, the game drive feels like it will come apart at any moment.
Games awesome, XBL great and media great.

The PS3 is a very elegant machine. I am very impressed with the audio output much much better for playing movies than the 360. The quality is outstanding.

But what would you expect?

MS HW sucks software good.
Sony HW rocks software bad.

Each box is a reflection of their respective companies core strengths.

Go figure.

PS I like the achievements that was brilliant MS.

I have both and enjoy both. My PS3 gets more love, because of the blu-ray player aspects. Aside from that, I've been lucky in the fact that game releases that I'd want happen to skip between the two consoles.

One month, new PS3 game I want. Next month, new 360 game I want. After that, new PS3 game.

I don't mind Sony's software. The XMB is a great interface. Prefer it over the Xbox's interface. Now their respective marketplaces, Xbox has got Sony beat. Hands down.

I think Microsoft could work on making more frequent updates and integrating more Microsoft products with the 360. Imagine being able to play Halo 3 with a Microsoft wireless keyboard, the latest Sidewinder mouse, and have your Zune as a HUD radar.

The achievements was a brilliant idea on MS's part. My friend is an achievement whore and will buy any game just to unlock the achievements on it to increase their gamer score. Don't know how many times I've heard "God this game sucks, but I only have 1 more achievements to unlock."

He actually spent like 4-5 hours on Dead Rising to get the 24000 something zombie kills achievement.
