The Lite-On DX-4O1S external drive  (Source: PLDS)
Hook a Blu-ray Disc drive up to your laptop

With Blu-ray Disc now the clear victor in the high-definition format war, those cautious about buying hardware can spend with ease. Those with home theater PCs or laptops will be pleased to learn that Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS) will be soon releasing its first USB external BD-ROM drive in Q2 2008.

“Due to recent market developments we can expect an increasing volume of movies to be released in high definition on Blu-ray Discs,” said Jelmer Veldman, European Marketing Manager at PLDS. “The market adoption of Blu-ray as the optical disc standard for High Definition content results in a growing demand for Blu-ray playback solutions. The portable external Lite-On BD-ROM drive allows users to playback their Blu-ray discs on any PC via a USB 2.0 cable.”

The upcoming model, designated the Lite-On DX-4O1S can read Blu-ray Disc media at 4X, single-layer DVD at 12X, dual-layer DVD at 8X, and CD media at 32X maximum.

Those who prefer internal drives can find the Lite-On Blu-ray Disc drives for around $150.

Alternatively, HTPC addicts may consider the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, now on clearance for $50. While HD DVD may have limited future potential, the Xbox 360 add-on, which works with natively with Windows Vista, is an affordable option to view today’s high-definition content.

This theory applies to the 360 also. Why buy defective, overpriced, poorly manufactured and poorly thought out, rushed to the market, crap in the first place? Why the hell would people do this?

You mean like my PS3 that died due to a fan failure and has a title listing roughly the same size as the list of new GameCube games? Or the fact that if I have to send off my 360 I can keep my hard drive, but my PS3 was simply swapped out for a refurb (new??) without swapping out my HD hence loosing anything I had saved on my original PS3's HD? Like I love spending hours fiddling with PS3's lowest common denominator store to re-find my favorite trailers, demos, add-ons, etc? Give me a break.

Anyways, I bought another 360 HD DVD player as a spare, and if I were to pay $10 a piece for the "free 5 movies" I will essentially be getting a free, spare 360 HD DVD player. That and I can still get HD DVD movies at least the end of March, even longer for a few companies (Dream Works for one).

Oh, per the "rebate" form, today is the last day (28 Feb) to buy (at least) a 360 HD DVD and get the free movies. Ironic if you think about it...

In other notes, HD DVD *really* isn't dead - it is Monty Python Holy Grail dead. Samsung is still going to make its combo drive, a few movie houses are locked into HD DVD only, you can buy combo drives for your PC, and unlike Betamax tapes, well cared for HD DVDs won't wear out any time soon.

And sadly, even thought HD DVD is just wheezing, Blu-ray is a step back technology wise from HD DVD. Blu-ray needs a new version (2.0) to have what HD DVD started off with (PIP, download on demand, online updates, etc). HD DVD (disks) is cheap and easy to produce, blu-ray (disks) required some re-tooling to manufacture. I guess this whole format war is akin to finding the winner of "the Bachelor" had stuffed her bra, has false teeth, and is only 16.
