ISP mistake cuts off YouTube, Pakistan from the internet

The world was cut off from YouTube and Pakistan was cut off from the world, due to a series of mistakes in handling Pakistan’s decree to block the popular video-sharing site.

It all started on Sunday, when Pakistani officials announced that the country will begin censoring YouTube, citing videos considered blasphemous to the country’s Islamic values.

According to Information Week, Pakistan’s ISPs were given immediate orders to block the popular video-sharing site. One such ISP, PieNet, blocked YouTube in such a way that requests to the site were routed to a webpage that they saw fit. Trouble set in afterwards, when the block was propagated to Hong Kong-based telecom provider PCCW. Technical errors caused PCCW’s changes to propagate throughout the entire world, sending the world’s YouTube requests to PieNet’s block page.

Details of what happened next are unclear, but it appears PCCW spotted the error and saw fit to cut off Pakistan’s internet access until it resolved the issue.

“The leadership of Pakistan just created a massive Denial of Service [attack] on their own country,” wrote blogger Richard Stiennon in ZDNet’s Threat Chaos.

According to YouTube parent Google, problems lasted for “about two hours.”

“Traffic to YouTube was routed according to erroneous internet protocols, and many users around the world could not access our site,” said Google in a statement, noting that it is “working with others in the internet community to prevent this from happening again.”

Speaking with the BBC, an unnamed networking expert thinks the blackout was “probably a simple mistake made by an engineer … there’s nothing to suggest this was malicious.”

No! it is not the country (nobody sure anyway) where Usama is hiding but
It is the country where Bush says Usama is hiding.

Huge Difference.

Second, Bin Laden means 'Son of Laden' like McDonald or 'Son of Donald'. We are looking for Usama not just any son of Laden.

Just trying to make a positive use of the 'internets'.

I stand corrected. Osama Bin Laden-- I would hate to confuse anyone who might mistake Bin Laden for another person hiding, like Fernando Bin Laden...

or one of his 50 siblings huh?... or one of the biggest contractors in Saudi Arabia with substantial presence in many other middle eastern countries?

stop automatically connecting 'bin laden' with Osama Bin Laden... consider this: his family has disowned him, his country has kicked him out.

and before you say i don't know jack, one of the bin laden group's headquarters are LITERALLY a stone's throw from me.

and no, i am not on Osama Bin Laden's side, i'm just annoyed by your smug tone.

I again stand corrected. And to think that Osama could have tainted the Bin Laden name by waging holy war on the U.S...
Sorry, when I hear Bin Laden I hear terrorist- maybe because when I learned of the name Bin Laden it was around the time I was watching television feed of burning people jumping out of skyscrapers, buildings collapsing, and my country under attack. I am sorry that good people are associated with the Bin Laden name that happens to be associated with a murderer-- not my fault. But you think with all of the money made from contracting oil they could have taken care of thier own bad seed (Osama) before it sprouted???
Also, I am not very good at being smug. Just sharing my feelings...you have every right to be annoyed.

You know, I grew up with people that would get annoyed when I or others would substitute other words for the letters KKK. Klu Klux Klan may be correct but give their position of equal rights or just plain having the right breathe, I'd say they and others deserve whatever they get.

In other words, so freakin what if anyone uses bin Laden, Bin laden, Bone loaden or any other misspelling for "people" of their ilk.

Also, how do you know for sure Osama Bin Laden is NOT in Pakistan? Do I believe you or president Bush? Hmmm that's a tough one.

You are telling me that link is the holy grail/koran to all of the lies Bush has told? Do you mean to tell me that he always lies? hmmmm...
Also, you haven't told me how you know OBL is not in Pakistan.

No offense intended to Islam, sfi786 - but a state of perpetually pissed-off is a state of perpetually not playing nice with the other kids.

Hate and anger are the burden of the bearer. Let it go folks, there will always be infidels. Please, pretty please learn to cope.

So...

if I point out something hateful done by the 'other side' then I am being hateful?

You don't work at Fox News by any chance?

You can point out instances of Fox News blowing up women and children?

Certainly the 'other side' (as we are to you) has done some serious damage - however, has it been hatefully targeted at innocent women and children?

'They' say that the suicide bombings in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan have been attributed to a resistance to US forces/influence in the area. These suicide bombings, killings of the innocents we are sworn to protect - KEEP US THERE. Please, for the love of all that is holy, stop blowing people up. We will leave. It's just that simple. One way to envision a more peacefull world for your children to live in is to not strap on a suicide vest on the way to work.

The fact is they do blow up their own people to try and make us look bad, Not only that but they hide their own people in buildings that might be targeted. They are only interested in making the US look like the bad guy so they can take control for them selves.

The reason we stay in places like Iraq and afghan is because of the people that are trying to cease control, The idea that these people are trying to simply kick us out is absurd. If these people would stop using terror tactics to try and control the government there we would leave sooner rather then later.
