Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on gets put out of its misery

It looks as though Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on is the latest victim of HD DVD's failure in the marketplace. Microsoft announced today through its Gamerscore Blog that the Xbox 360 HD DVD player will no longer be manufactured.

The move to discontinue the Xbox 360 HD DVD player comes just weeks after Microsoft lowered the Toshiba-manufactured player’s price from $179 to $129.99 following mass defections to the Blu-ray standard. The drive was priced at $199 when it launched in late 2006.

Toshiba officially signaled the death of the HD DVD format on February 19 after it faced defections from Netflix, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. The company suffered an even bigger blow in early January when Warner Bros. decided to abandon HD DVD to focus on Blu-ray.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Toshiba Corp. President and CEO Atsutoshi Nishida earlier this week. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Although Microsoft will no longer provide the Xbox 360 HD DVD player, the company is committed to continuing standard product support and warranty support for the add-on. Given the latest bit of news from Microsoft, expect a fire sale on Xbox 360 HD DVD players in the coming weeks as retailers rush to kick them off store shelves.

When it comes to the Xbox 360 platform, Microsoft simply stated, "We do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace."

Ps3 had a quicker marketing than xbox, they will have to release a blue ray edition much will it cost Microsoft OUCH!

PS3 was very good at their marketing strategy. PS3 should out sale xbox for the next couple months hopefully. GET THE GAMES OUT! FOR PS3!!!

sorry, my brother owns a ps3 no me, i've played roughly 10 hrs on it if that...I like my pc better than those piece of garbage consoles.

For god sake, why do fanboys compare PCs to consoles? Yes, they are all basically computers inside and all, but PC costs and flexibility were always, always high and thus pricey to follow for most folks. Consoles are closed systems dedicated to gaming (and now media w/updates) that are very cost-effective and efficient to the length of their lives (3-6 years, in general). Saying that consoles suck is stupid. If you are a PC-gamer that just hates the controllers then you can always use a keyboard/mouse combo w/some of the consoles (especially PS3 where it's supported). So there's no console vs. PC. It's all about where people's money at. Gaming should be about games, not the hardware they are running on.

wow are you really that narrowminded? Have you noticed the volume of games for the PC as compared to consoles? Or, better yet... How many new games are there for the PC that arent out for the Console. Ill say 1 word, Crysis, and it is too demanding to run on either 360 or PS3 (though we will soon be seing a release for it. the PS3 is the only console remotely capable of handling Crysis. It may be just my opinion, as i am primarily a PC Gamer, but its not that we dont like controllers, we just like the upgradability, and multi-functionality of PCs. get yourself a good pc, and try some games.

I don't know about you but I enjoy the X360 commercials more. I like how they float down from a hot air ballon and setup a X360 entertainment center ontop of a parking garage having everyone come over and play instead of looking at a white room with a PS3 leaking oil everywhere.

actually it won't cost Microsoft too much, I remembered I read an article saying Sony welcomes Microsoft to join the Blu Ray camp.
