HP 2133  (Source: Engadget)
HP's 2133 sub-notebook breaks cover

ASUS's Eee PC took the world and the mobile industry by storm. The tiny, two-pound device features a 7" display, 900MHz Celeron processor, SSD (ranging in size of 2GB to 8GB) and wireless connectivity.

HP is also looking to get into the market with its new 2133 ultra-portable notebook. According to leaked images obtained by Engadget, the 2133 features an 8.9" glossy display (1366x768), 95% full-size keyboard, ExpressCard slot, WLAN and an integrated webcam. An SSD will be optional with the device and will most likely be of the 1.8" variety. Users can choose either Windows Vista or Linux for the operating system.

When it comes to styling, the HP 2133 makes the ASUS Eee PC look rather plain and boring. The 2133 features a smooth, sleek shape and has an exterior made from anodized aluminum. According to HP, the exterior is also free of screws to further emphasis the smooth, clean look.

As is usually the case with leaked information on future products, there is no word on pricing for the new ultra-portable device. Given the features and aluminum body, the 2133 is likely to be priced well above that of the Eee PC which starts at a mere $299. Opting for the SSD is sure to push prices even higher into the stratosphere.

Stay tuned for further details on the HP 2133 as an official announcement is likely just around the corner.

They could probably have made up the difference by switching from Vista only to an XP option.

Even if the two operating systems were matched on battery life, having Vista's Windows Explorer briefly peg one CPU core at 100% every single time you change the folder directory isn't going to do your battery life any favors. SP1 never fixed this either.

Windows XP is running for pretty cheap right now, especially for college students. Just ask one and I'm sure they can get an installation CD for about 10 bucks and then you can buy an external CD/DVD drive...this is getting pricy, just go with Linux.

I for one would like a 10" 1280x800 LED backlit screen with a 16:9 480p webcam (no real need for 720p) and make it SLIGHTLY bigger to maintain keyboard size. The speakers can be placed in the front of the laptop and not by the screen (either way, people will probably be using headphones for this anyways because its not meant to rock out).

Also it would be great if instead of that trackpad it has the Lenovo red nipple mouse control but I don't know if HP can legally implement that.

I really hope that they have XP on this. 900Mhz just wont cut it with Vista.

I have the Fujitsu U1010 3.5G version, and at 800Mhz with Vista Home Basic, its just too slow. I do like the 3.5G HSDPA as I use it on the road, but I think I should have just bought something slightly bigger, and a CF 3.5G card instead.

The 'red nipple' is called a TrackPoint by Lenovo nee IBM. IBM developed the technology, but licenses it various manufacturers. It is usually only available on business-class laptops. This is a shame as I love the TrackPoint. Every keyboard I own (both desktop and laptop) has one. I feel it is a must for any real touch-typist, as with the TrackPoint your hands don't have to leave the keys to mouse as they do with a trackpad or regular mouse.
