Wii will stay on top, says Activision

Earlier this week, EA told the media and investors its belief that the Wii would stay on top and that PlayStation 3 would outstrip the Xbox 360 in western market sales throughout 2008.

Although Activision didn’t dispute its competitor’s prediction on the ongoing sales of the Wii, it did put the Xbox 360 ahead of the PlayStation 3 for the year in North America.

Activision revealed during to Q3 earning call that it expects the Wii to sell more than 6 million units, the Xbox 360 to sell 4 to 5 million units, the PS3 somewhere between 3-4 million and the PS2 trailing off at 2 to 3 million.

The games publisher also was pleased to announce record holiday sales, up 80 percent over the previous year with $1.48 billion in sales and $272.2 in profit. Big titles helping to drive Activision’s positive report are Guitar Hero III and Call of Duty 4.

Slated for 2008 will be more games that Activision hopes will bring it another record period. According to Variety, Guitar Hero 4 will hit in the fall, but not before two other spinoffs in spring. The publisher also has the rights to release an adaptation of the upcoming James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.

With Activision the top publisher in the U.S. in 2007, the company’s next target is to unseat EA in Europe. "That's the low-hanging fruit for us," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said. "We have No. 1 market share in the U.S. but not Europe, and there's no reason we see why ‘Guitar Hero' shouldn't be the No. 1 product in Europe as well."

I have 0 friends with consoles, they suck and too many jaggies. High End PC Gaming is where its at. Yeh it costs alot more but it beats out a 360,PS3 and stupid WII wrapped up in one! There is nothing like playing Crysis on my $4000 setup 2560 x 1600 (30 in panel) With dual 8800 ultras... Consoles LOL

The key to what you just said there is "$4000 setup". That's becoming less and less feasible for PC gamers to spend and it's BECAUSE of consoles. Consoles are now basically PCs. They have USB ports, hard drives, online capabilities, etc. No, we're not at the point yet where you can use them for work, so they're not quite there yet, but they're getting close, and the next gen will get even closer.

My point is this: Most PC games that come out these days are multi platform releases. The two big exceptions I can think of from 2007 are Crysis and The Witcher. You hardly needed to upgrade your machine to play the Witcher, but you definitely needed to spend some money to play Crysis. Everything else that came out was stuff that was EXACTLY THE SAME GAME ON THE CONSOLES!!! The only difference is that you seem to have to keep upgrading your PC to play the latest console titles. What sense does that make? Have you seen the hardware requirements for Assassin's Creed on the PC? That's ridiculous. Whether it's because of inefficient coding or not, it is what it is. That's the way things are going. PCs are becoming nothing more than really expensive consoles, and consoles are becoming low functioning PCs.

For these reasons, I'm slowly migrating to the 360 for my gaming. I have been a hardcore PC gamer for about 20 years, but even I see the writing on the wall.

Yeah you are definately the rule of thumb when it comes to gamers. Just about everyone i know has a $4k pc to use as a toy. Idiot. Funny thing is, i guarantee you the console version of crysis would play better on a console than on your $4k pc if i were to use a k&m. Optimized gaming ftw?

A 30" monitor is 2560 x 1600. That's a bit higher than 1920 x 1080. ;)

Maybe not for you, but with the $2800 less than your rig that I spent on my upgrade this year, I will buy every PC and PS3 game that interests me, a PSP, a big memory stick, and plates, a years worth of insurance, and a whole lot of gas for my R1. Maybe not the gas, that new 18x optical Olympus is out now.

Still, my Crysis experience is 1920x1080 at best, so you've got me there.
