PlayStation 3 gets new color in Japan

While gamers throughout the rest of the world get their PlayStation 3 in any color they wish, so long as it’s black, Japan will soon be receiving its third color variant.

On March 6, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan will release a “Satin Silver” colored PlayStation 3 for 39,980 yen ($376). The new model will differ from the existing “Clear Black” and “Ceramic White” models only in color, as the “Satin Silver” console will carry on with a 40GB hard drive.

Included with the new package will be standard definition cables and one controller. Although Sony did not clearly state in its press release, it’s assumed that the new console will ship with a SIXAXIS controller, as a matching silver DualShock 3 is advertised as being sold separately.

Also exclusive to Japan will be a new “Satin Silver” bundle pack that will ship with the PS3 exclusive game Ryu ga Gotoku KENZAN! (known in the west as Yakuza 3) and matching dragon tattoo stickers for 47,040 yen ($441). The special bundle will be limited to just 1,000 units, guaranteeing it to be an instant sell-out.

Meanwhile, North American gamers may soon be getting their second PlayStation 3 shade, as a “Ceramic White” PlayStation 3 has been spotted in an FCC filing.

Not bad

Generally I don't like the PS3, but in this particular case the silver looks very slick. Nice paint job.

I agree. Definitely better looking than the ceramic white one. This would actually go with my stereo equipment.

If you are willing to pay the premium, there is already a weay to get a PS3 in any color you want *cough*ColorWare*cough*. Honestly though, Black or white really seem like the more mainstream options anyway. I, for one, have most of my consoles tucked away to where you can only see enough of them to put in a disc and do not see the big deal about having a system in a particular color.

If it's tucked away it might overheat.

I keep a 360, PS2 and Wii all tucked away and have never had a problem with any of them overheating. The PS3 prolly has the best colling I have seen in a system ni a while, that heatsink/fan assembly is huge, and shoudl I pick one up eventually it will get tucked away with the rest.

you may be lucky. I tucked away my PS3 (60GB model) inside the TV stand w/ glass doors, and its fan was whining and was really bothering me. The PS3 and the air around it was really warm that I was afraid it's gonna overheat and die. Now I place it outside vertically and the issue is gone.

I could have sworn...

that it said "satan" silver, and I was really curious where Sony was going with that.

It does look cool though...

Man, I don't like red, but if they made a Satan Red, I'd probably buy it over another color (if I were in the market for a PS3)

Go with the evil angle, evil Sony!

Now is the time to buy a PS3

Finally what i was waiting for since ages!!! I always wanted to buy a silver PS3 with a dualshock controller because i was bored of that black color(reason:black PS2)...and also in 2008 PS3 has more exclusives that 360...so EA's sales predictions for PS3 seems to be in line.

Exclusive = good. At least with the awesome lineup for the PS3 this and next year.

Doesn't the Wii in Japan support DVD playback? That's the only place where it does I think.

Nintendo has released tons of extra colors and special editions of the DS and Lite and such for Japan only.

You think you have it bad in the states, try living in the UK.

We get stuff latter than you guys and it's normally more expensive too.

I'm sure there are worse off places than the UK though.

Yep, like Australia

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that someone is worse off.

Yeah, I think it's strange how so many products in the UK are actually more expensive than in the US after a currency conversion. The British pound is worth twice the US dollar, yet you guys are paying similar prices numerically. For example, a $500 product in the US costs 400 or 450 pounds (I don't know how to do the symbol :P) in the UK, when it should be closer to 250 pounds.

What's up with that?

By AnnihilatorX on 2/5/2008 11:36:01 AM , Rating: 2
I believe partially it's due to the VAT.
But some stuff are more than 17.5% more expensive so there would be other reasons too.

By Aloonatic on 2/5/2008 11:52:06 AM , Rating: 2
There's VAT then you have to factor in the ridiculous expensive cost of real estate in the UK (even if it's an on-line shop it still needs offices and such, high street properties prices and taxes are crazy pricey) as well as the costs of employing people for businesses.

I'm not sure if there is a National insurance type scheme in the states where the employee is taxed and then the employer is taxed too??

There's all the 4 weeks holiday and maternity leave stuff that all adds to the cost of stuff.

Then there's the price of fuel over here, just getting things to the shops or your door isn't cheap thanks to the cost of petrol/diesel, mostly due to tax.

It's a miracle things cost as little as they do when you think about it.

Anyways, it all adds up and converting using $ to £ figures from the news is rarely a good idea.

Sometimes stuff's cheaper too. I think we do well on the mobile phone front for example.

Economics is all made up anyway.

Try living in Canada where our dollar is stornger than the
American and we still have prices that reflect times when the Canadian Dollar was 75% of the American...

By Trisagion on 2/5/2008 11:05:26 AM , Rating: 2
It's not just because it's their "home" market. The Japanese gaming market is loyal to Sony. It's one of the few places where the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360. Sony would be foolish to ignore this. Hence more exclusive games, first game releases and more PS3 variants.

Basically, it all comes down to marketing and profits.

You are the Debbie Downer of PS3 threads.

By TerranMagistrate on 2/5/2008 12:18:25 PM , Rating: 2
Is there anything that doesn't upset you about Sony? It seems like there's a new reason to whine with each new article. Do you think it's easy and cost effective to always have worldwide simultaneous releases on everything new they bring out? I don't.

By deeznuts on 2/5/2008 1:03:03 PM , Rating: 2
Because MS and Nintendo doesn't offer anything special in their home land (i.e. lazy, uninitiated, etc. etc.) that's reason to complain? Are you serious? And this upsets you?

Now you're just reaching.

Thats like complaining that your friends mom only bakes him cookies, and not you. And your mom doesn't bake anything. This isn't being upset, it's being jealous. Yeah I know that isn't a perfect analogy (Sony is selling something) but it is good enough. Be upset if Sony is selling special colors etc. for everyone in the US EXCEPT for you or your city.

Anyways, as shown below Nintendo does offer special stuff for Japan. You upset at them yet?

By treehugger87 on 2/5/2008 2:03:40 PM , Rating: 2
Honnestly? Nintendo makes Way more stuff for the japanese market. Do u even remember the DS Tv add-on they made, they have numerous accessories that we don't see in North America. I'm pretty sure North Americans can deal with Sony treating the Japanese to one extra colour that has limited quantities, since we will be getting white.
