At the International 2008 Consumer Electronics Show Intel today unveiled 16 new processors, all of which are constructed on the company’s 45nm node. The new processor now brings the number of 45nm Intel processors, including server, desktop, and mobile chips, to 32.  

Of the 16 processors launched today, five are mobile chips, four are server chips and the remaining seven processors are desktop chips.  The new chips offer lower power consumption along with higher performance.

Included in the announcement today are Intel’s first 45nm mobile chips for its Centrino mobile platform. The company states that the new chips are 25% smaller than previous models, making them easier to integrate into mobile devices.

Asus and Foxconn roadmaps indicate Apple will announce a new portable computing device based on these 45nm mobile processors next week.

Intel differentiates the launch date of its three 45-nm Core 2 Quad chips from its Core 2 Duo offerings and does not specifically state the Core 2 Quad processors will launch in January. Instead, the company labels the launch dates of the three quad-core chips as Q1, indicating that Intel delayed availability of its Core 2 Quad desktop processors to either February or March.

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes claimed Intel relaxed its launch date on 45nm Core 2 Quad to prolong the life of its nearly competitionless 65nm Core 2 Quad. 

Intel adamantly denied this allegation, though the company could not provide any alternative explanation for the delay either.
