The hottest movies, music, tv shows, and artists of 2007 -- by p2p statistics
released a fascinating report
, which names the biggest winners, in terms of popularity, (or losers, in terms of revenue) of 2007. The report which was based on statistics that Wired staffers grabbed by monitoring and probing peer-to-peer (p2p) networks, detailed the top songs, movies, tv shows, and artists of the year.
The top artists were:
4. 50 Cent
5. R. Kelly
6. Lil Wayne
7. Justin Timberlake
10. Snoop Dogg
Some may notes that Radiohead was absent from this list. While their album,
released as a choose-your-price download
in terms of a statement, even its relatively strong downloads of a couple million were not enough to compare to the massive p2p traffic for the year.
The top songs of year were:
1. Shop Boyz, "Party Like A Rock Star"
2. Akon, "I Wanna Luv U"
3. Sean Kingston, "Beautiful Girls"
4. Mims, "This Is Why I'm Hot"
5. Akon, "Don't Matter"
6. T-Pain, "Bartender"
7. Soulja Boy, "Crank Dat Soulja Boy"
8. Justin Timberlake, "My Love"
9. DJ Unk, "Walk It Out"
10. Jim Jones, "We Fly High"
For the movies, the following items topped the list:
Resident Evil: Extinction
Pirates of The Caribbean: At World's End
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The only possible surprise here is that
was not the most pirated movie!
Finally, the top TV shows were:
2. "Prison Break"
3. "Top Gear"
5. "Desperate Housewives"
6. "House, M.D."
8. "Grey's Anatomy"
This lists adds an interesting perspective when looking at the
. It illustrates the runaway success of NBC's heroes and how much of a hit Apple will take if NBC decides to eventually sever its month to month contract. However, it also shows that most of the rest of the top content is on Fox and ABC, so iTunes may be able to get by with just these offerings.
The year of 2007 was certainly a wild one for p2p and torrents, with the RIAA scoring a
landmark jury verdict of $222,000 in damages against working mom Jammie Thomas
, p2p defending
hackers attacking the RIAA
, confessions that
Comcast throttles p2p traffic
, and Swedish based torrent leader
The Pirate Bay's admins facing criminal charges
. One can only guess the escapades that 2008 may have in store for the
millions of web-pirates

Why does it seem like the top artists downloaded seem to be the least artistic of them all?
I guess MTV really does a good job of drilling crap into the minds of the 15yr olds.
I'll never understand the transition MTV made from bands with musical talent to today.
The Music on MTV today seems to be either:
1. Not written by band and/or artist (just sung)
2. Cannot play an instrument
3. Just 1 person that hires a band to record album and another to tour with.
I know all dont fall into this category but a lot do and makes me wonder how they ever got a record deal.

Record companies, and MTV, dont sell music.
They sell personalities, a strategy that has been succesful beyond their wildest dreams. Ever wonder how such talentless, inept, unmusical people could be at the top of the music industry? Only because its not about the music, its about the image, and its about manipulation to make people believe that they actually like the music.
