WidoPC's newest gaming notebooks gets some serious firepower

WidowPC announced today that it is shipping its first notebook based around NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce 8800M GTX GPU.

The new Sting 517D2 pairs the GeForce 8800M GTX GPU with a 17" (WSXGA+ or WUXGA) display. Intel's Core 2 Duo processors power the notebooks and up to 4GB of DDR2 memory and 1GB of Intel TurboMemory can be added to enhance the gaming experience.

"The new GeForce 8800M GPUs allow gamers to have the ultimate gaming experience on a mobile platform," said Joshua McClure, General Manager at WidowPC. "These new 8800M video cards are exactly what the doctor ordered to play Crysis at advanced levels of visual realism. We’re proud to be the first in North America to ship this incredible performance enhancer."

The Sting 517D2 has a base price of $2,799 and comes standard with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, WSXGA+ display, 1GB of DDR2 memory and a GeForce 8700M GT 512MB GPU. The GeForce 8800M GTX GPU can be added for a whopping $738. Another notable option is the MTRON 32GB SSD which can be had for an additional $1,137.

For the price you'd think they would come with a decent friggin' LCD panel as opposed to some of the lowest res screens in the industry. Especially since they are pandering to the imaging/video editing crowd, 1440x900 is ridiculous IMO. 1680x1050 should be the minimum on a decent 15" Wide LCD panel. Oh well, somebody has to keep paying for Mr. Job's turtlenecks, it just won't be me.

Hmm.. 1280x800 is also normal on a 15.4" screen. 1440x900 is nicer in my opinion and maby best suited for the size many will agree. 1680x1050 is pretty extreme on such a screen? At least unless one use software that compensates with making text larger.

At my work we have 15.4" Fujitsu Siemens laptops with 1440x900 default resolution. Still there are several of people here who put lower resolution (knowingly making the display kind of unclear since it's non-default for the LCD) because they think text is too small.

I guess it's a matter of taste and eyesight, I'm sure you agree, phax. "Ridiculus" isn't really the word you're after here. There is always someone who wants it different, like yourself. I think Apples chosen resolution of 1440x900 resolution will fit most people fine.

You are correct, ultimately I suppose it is a matter of taste and eye-sight as you put it... though I think it would at least be nice for Apple to offer a WSXGA+ 15 inch screen as an option... Lenovo's Professional series Thinkpads have had this option for years.
