Many HDTV and home theater fans have been waiting lustfully for the advent of the OLED HDTV era to come. OLED HDTVs promise brighter pictures, much slimmer sizes and less power consumption.
Toshiba announced in October that it would have its own 30-inch OLED HDTV on the market by 2009. Many had hoped when Toshiba announced its OLED plans that it would actually
bring the OLED sets to market, rather than simply teasing the idea as
it did with SED TVs in 2006.
Last week Reuters reported that Toshiba announced it was shelving its plans to sell OLED TVs in the 2009 and 2010 time frame.
In October of 2007 Sony was the first major electronics maker to market with an OLED TV, but it came with a few caveats. Sony's introduction display was only 11 inches, far from what home theater fans want to watch a movie on. The second caveat was the cost of the TV at over $1,700 USD.
Even with the screen size and cost issues many electronics aficionados in the United States were excited by the prospects of possibly getting one of the Sony XEL-1 OLED TVs in their hands this year. Again there was a catch to the statement with Sony’s Stan Glasgow saying the XEL-1 would only make it if demand in Japan was not high enough to sell all 2000 units.
Sony's OLED TV won't be the only kid on the block in 2009 if Samsung has anything to do with it. Last month, Samsung announced its OLED roadmap including 14-inch, 15-inch, and 21-inch OLED HDTVs in 2009 with larger 40-inch and 42-inch panels by 2010.
According to Reuters, Toshiba will stick to its plans for producing and selling smaller OLED screens for use in mobile phones and other electronic devices.
Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Homeric told Reuters, “Toshiba will stick to its plans to commercialize smaller OLED displays for mobile phones next year, and will watch markets and technological developments to see whether making OLED TVs is commercially viable later.”
