Non-Cingular customers will have to wait or switch

According to several reports, Apple is on the verge of introducing its first mobile phone to consumers. The news comes forward as Apple and Cingular Wireless signed an agreement to introduce Apple's iPhone. The iPhone will be released as a Cingular exclusive sometime in 2007. Those who were previously waiting for the phone to be available as an Apple standalone product will have to look at a Cingular contract to obtain the phone.

The iPhone will be equipped with a 2.5-inch 56K color LCD and have an integrated 3 megapixel iSight camera. The built in iSight will be able to take still pictures as well as motion video. Interestingly, Cingular Wireless was also the exclusive distributor for Motorola's ROKR mobile phone, which was the first phone with integrated iTunes.

DailyTech previously reported that Apple officially confirmed the iPhone. Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer confirmed to reporters that the company would indeed introduce a mobile phone to compete with offerings from Sony, Motorola and other manufacturers. The iPhone is expected to be in a gum-stick form factor. No details on what type of storage the phone will be equipped with -- hard drive or solid state flash memory -- but analysts currently predict iPod Nano-like storage capabilities. More details as they come.

iTunes vs Any tunes
By Hakuryu on 9/28/2006 6:23:24 PM , Rating: 1
It still boggles my mind that so many people will pay for songs on a proprietary format usable only by iTunes related products.

Buy a CD and rip to MP3 and I can use the songs in my car (2007 Camry-MP3 ready), MP3 player, PC, current cell phone, or any CD/DVD device if I burn songs to a CD. Sure you can buy only single songs from Apple, but I buy most of my CD's at the Record Exchange for 10-50% of the cost of a new one.

If I use iTunes however, my options diminish unless I feel like buying Apple products.

Hmm, like what I do? I use iTunes (iTunes != iTunes Store) to organize the same music on four different computers (two Macs and two PCs). I have about 2500 songs on my iPod and all but 20 are ripped from CD and hence can be played on any MP3 device. I can burn the other others to a CD (thus removing the DRM) if I want (yes, I know it lowers the quality). I'm hardly tied into Apple.

Wow...2500 mp3's... (not really amazed)

iTunes has been a mess since before Apple bought the company that developed it as SoundJam MP. Why anybody likes this for more than about 10 songs baffles me.

It manages my 5000 songs just fine, and I like not spending loads of my time having to manually do everything. Rip and it is done. Drag and drop music and it is done. No hassle, no manual file organisation, it works. It is a little slow in terms of interface although it looks reasonably slick, and Apple has a habit of releasing new versions before they're really ready for release. Also it's not very good with syncing to iPods with a capacity less than your collection, it doesn't provide a feature like "Fill to capacity from Playlist X", which annoys me no end.

People use iTunes Music Store because it is cheap and convenient. I wouldn't use it for buying albums, I like having the physical product, but I can understand people buying singles on it. Now if they sold losslessly encoded music it would be more interesting to me.

Basically it's software for people who have better things to do with their time.

Wish I could get your version of iTunes. I currently have over 10,000 MP3s, and iTunes was a complete dog when it came to organizing them. I could only view about 35-40 given songs on the screen at once, creating playlists was a pain, it always tried to convert stuff when I dragged it over to the playlist, not to mention it was slow to start up and shut down, while eating well over 50MB of memory while open. NO MP3 program should eat 50MB of memory! Plus, the search feature to find songs was like pulling teeth (really sloooow, probably because I've got 10000+ songs). I don't have an old comp either. A64 3700 with 1GB of ram. Me, I'm back to Winamp 2.95. Can view about 100+ songs on at any given time, eats less than 15MB of memory, simple interface, and the jump feature is just as effective as apple's only much faster and smoother.

I whole-heartedly agree with this sentiment. I've got about 13,600+ mp3's at the moment and Winamp has been the best for me to keep track of them for quite some time.

I've got Windows Media Center too, so I have to mirror my library in WMP 10 so I can stream the songs to my 360. The library file is 300mb+...why can't we got more software like Winamp?

mp3's on my iPod, and I dont use iTunes at all. LOL. You guys are such kids, anyone else notice the blatant ramp-up of my-status-is-more-than-yours mp3 amount? Hilarious.

I refrained from mentioning the size of my library in my first post to avoid that exact thing....oh well. It's not like I'd fill up more than a 60gb iPod at the moment anyways.

Also, in your effort to criticise the conversation, you missed the point: Nobody's saying that the iPod won't handle the music well, it's iTunes.

Gum stick?

I believe it's the designation given to phones with a slim design overall and rectangular, no flip. Similar to how "flip phones" are "clam shell form factor".

nice size screen, 56k is pretty junky though. 3mp cam though? I'd be interested in seeing what kind of pictures it can take. Cingular for me is a deal breaker, they suck where I live

I'm sure they meant 65k, but that's still pretty lame, 262k is the norm for decent phones these days...

3MP camera with a 65K screen? That is just unacceptable... and I wonder if there is memory expansion slot for the phone.

Killer product or Also Ran ???

Hurray, the New Phone book is here...I mean iPhone...I want one so I can be somebody...

Darn it, I just re-upped with Verizon, guess I will have to wait 2 years before I can be cool, Maybe VZ will have one by then.

Any idea how many mp3 phones will be out there by the end of 2007?
Is this a killer product, or will it play out like the ESPN Phone, great idea, but a harder sell than they thought it would be.

RE: Killer product or Also Ran ???
By LtFarva on 9/29/2006 8:11:54 AM , Rating: 2
Well, I think the exclusivity for the phone is 6 months. Not entirely sure, but it is probably the same as the iTunes SLVR. So considering verizon has one now, I would assume verizon would have one by the end of 2007 (as long as it comes out early enough).

It will probably be a good selling phone, unless it is butt ugly like that new mighty mouse they came out with. Even then it will sell.

Most phones should be mp3 players by the end of 07 i think, or at least play songs off a microSD card like the vx8300 I have. Not too difficult or expensive.

Let me guess....

Cingular and Apple.......2 great reasons to stay far away from this thing! (sarcastic eye roll)

I've had Cingular ever since they bought/merged with AT&T Wireless and I've had nothing but outstanding reception everywhere I go. Who knows?

"I'm tired of all these T-Mobile Fanboys saying they got it all. Cingular is for the creative elite, and all of Hollywood uses it. Cingular!!"

Wow? Really? So if normal computer is using Intel...it is also better? But how does that make Mac better than normal PC when both uses Intel? Oh wait...Mac is STILL always better because you love it to death and are oblivious to reasons people use Mac...Fanboy, you have much to learn.

People use either Mac or PC for different reasons. Not because one is better than the other.
