You can now buy Beats products at the Apple Store

Apple announced its intentions to acquire Beats Music and Beats Electronics -- the popular headphones brand co-founded by rapper Dr. Dre -- for $3 billion USD back in May of this year. Today, both Apple and Beats announced the completion of their merger on their respective websites.

"Today we are excited to officially welcome Beats Music and Beats Electronics to the Apple family. Music has always held a special place in our hearts, and we’re thrilled to join forces with a group of people who love it as much as we do," said Apple on its website.

"Beats cofounders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre have created beautiful products that have helped millions of people deepen their connection to music. We’re delighted to be working with the team to elevate that experience even further.

"And we can’t wait to hear what’s next."

The deal consists of a purchase price of $2.6 billion USD, and $400 million USD in stock options.

Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young -- also known as Dr. Dre -- will both join Apple, but it's unclear what their exact roles will be at this time.

"At the beginning of portable digital music, the iPod placed the library of the world's music in your pocket. The iPhone became not only an instrument for music, but also the center of your connected life. The iPad extended this capability with a user interface and apps that allowed you to compose a symphony on the subway,” said Beats' website.

"Starting today, we at Beats are fortunate to add our instrument to this legacy by joining Apple. The products we build together will allow us to reimagine sound once again and to continue this great tradition of bringing imagination to life."

The deal will also bring Beats’ subscription music service into the fold

apple managed to buy a company that charges more (in terms of %) for its products compared to its competitors than Apple does.

Incredible. Why couldn't Apple have bought a company like Audio Technica, or, many other companies that make better headphones than beats at a lower price...

Oh yeah, Apple is not thinking about the best user experience anymore (See: Steve Jobs, that is what he tried to do, he also did want large margins, but, at least the products were made to be good in his opinion) moving to "well, it costs a lot, and looks pretty"

Sigh, I can't believe I am saying this, but, Steve Jobs, please come back to Apple...

Maybe they tried but those companies had too much self respect to sell themselves off :)

It would also be terrible to have Apple meddling with actual quality products and inevitably increasing the prices.

That article was awesome. TL;DR

"You don't become successful by selling the best products and services. You become successful by marketing your ass off!"

It explains why Apple spent a ridiculous amount of money on Beats, a company known for its image and customer base, when it could have spend less on a company with a better reputation for quality.

Exactly, they bought an IMAGE. However this is where the real difficulty is, Beats is a (more or less) fad fueled by mainly younger people who will someday grow up and move on. Apple has to move that message to a newer (younger) group when this happens.

Lots of risk...

Tony, I read the article, but I'm still totally confused about this. Could be a generation thing, as I've never heard a single song by Lady Gaga and frankly at this point assume that future historians will look back at what's currently considered "leading edge" and marvel at how gullible the sheeple were back in 2014.

But, anyway, I'm willing to learn. Where is society headed such that Apple has spent a fortune connecting themselves with Beats?

the problem is, when I look at Apple historically, they have been a mix of clever marketing, and adding/tweaking features to be the best that they believe they can bring to consumers.

Beat's acquisition makes sense from one side of that, what your linked article says it very true. But, from the side of Apple that I believe truly kept it alive when it was failing, and, what is allowed the iPhone, is the other part.

That part seems to be falling little by little, sadly.

On that note, should have mentioned Apple's customer service. My experience in stores is very good... I don't think anyone (including me) would expect them to replace the dead fan on a G4 (maybe it was g5, not 100% sure) (happened in 2011) iMac for free...

Apple is best at writing very good advertising while taking ideas that exist and making sure every little part is the best it can be for a user. For the most part. With occasionally huge jumps over what everyone else is doing.

That is what the iPod did, that is what the iPad did.

Huge jumps are the original iPhone, the Retina MBP, etc.

However, at its core, it typically takes a product/product class are refines it extremely well.

Most of the stuff Apple does you can find people who did the same before it, Apple just does it better, usually way better.

Even with their ARMv8 custom core, they made a custom ARM core that beat everyone else. Who did that before them? Qualcomm, and, likely a few others. Did Apple do it better, I would say so.

I do not have a negative view of Apple, although, it is starting to slip into a neutral view. I grew up using Apple's OSes and Windows.

However, at the core of it all, what Apple is best at is taking ideas that exist and refining them, implementing them better than anyone else.

They also usually have superb marketing.

Which, is why, as its cores, Apple is a mix of incredibly clever marketing and adding/tweaking features and products[/i] to be the best they believe they can bring to consumers.

They do occasionally reach outside that area, but, it is not often enough imho to make it part of a very short description of Apple.

Are you kidding me? AT or Sennheiser being bought by Apple is probably the worst thing that could happen to Audiophiles around the globe.

Apple buying Beats, on the other hand, is poetic gold. I said it before and I'll say it again, If we could just get Apple to buy BMW, Diesel, Ed Hardy, & the rest of Monster, and hire Kanye West for their spokeperson...then the universe will have balance restored.

given Apple's design philosophy that was kept to when Jobs was around (best user experience) I don't think it would be a problem.

Given they had bought one of those, I think they would be proclaiming they are keeping the best possible user experience as what they value most.

This shows they are just valuing being flashy and hip (however Beats managed to be hip is beyond me...) and ignoring the thing that truly led to their original success, imo.

A porcupine has the pricks on the OUTSIDE.

So....the zombie apocalypse actually starts at Apple? Not surprising, as many of their fans are sort of brain dead....

Rude comments aside, it really shouldn't be that surprising that one overpriced technology company bought up another one. If they bought up the company with the better product for less money, people might start thinking that perhaps....just MAYBE.....Apple's products are not worth as much as they've been paying for them, either.

Got to maintain the image, if you want to maintain the gross profit margin, right?

Perhaps the iPhone 6 will now come with headphones that don't fall apart within 30 days.

I guess it's probably too soon for it to be announced with the iPhone 6, but I'm positive they'll be coming out with some Beats headphones with a Lightning jack instead of the standard 3.5mm end.

I think you're right there. The best way Apple can make money by buying Beats is to tally eliminate the standard jack and then sell overpriced headphones with the new jack and license it to other headphone producers at extortionate prices.

Also, I'm sure Dr. Dre's position at Apple will be the same as it was at "Beats", figurehead and advertising mascot.

Believe it or not, the most recent WWDC mentioned precisely that.

So no one's ever heard of AKG, Bose, Denon, Senheiser, Sony or Yamaha.

It really puts a smile on my face when this kind of B.S. Marketing schmooze is spun. There should be a whiff of smoke, spelling "Suckers", hovering above that marketing statement.

BEATS was designed my Monster Cable in partnership with Dr. Dre and his partner.

The ONLY significant contribution, and it is THE reason Beats has been so successful (IMO) is Dre used visual marketing by getting athletes and DJ's to wear the headsets ....which get photographed by all the PHotogs. It was a brilliant use of cheap marketing. Get the 'famous' people who these kids want to be....to wear an overpriced/Bass-tuned headset in various colors.

Hey, to each his own, but I laugh at how easily people today are quick to turn over their cash, just because of urban fashion trends.

I guarantee.....If one athlete or rapper cut off the tip of his pinky finger as a fashion statement....you would see thousands of idiots do the same.

~Best wishes keeping your money.
