Apple's iPhone touts a better battery life and a more durable screen

Apple announced on Monday that the iPhone will deliver higher talk time than originally expected.  The iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time giving it the highest battery life of any other competing phone. 

Apple's new phone will also deliver 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.  The iPhone will also feature 250 hour—more than 10 days—of standby time.

The company also upgraded the screen on the phone from plastic to optical-quality glass.  The new upgrade gives the phone a scratch-resistant screen and better visibility.

“There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can't wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. 

Apple's iPhone measures 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.46" and weighs just 4.8 ounces. All input is entered via the device's 3.5" Multi-touch display which features a screen resolution of 320x480. The iPhone runs OS X and includes quad-band GSM/EDGE, 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity options.

The iPhone is set for release on June 29 at Apple online and retail stores and select AT&T retail stores for $499 and $599 respectfully (with 2-year contract) for the 4GB and 8GB versions.

I agree, sounds strange (his wording sounds strange, not its strange that i agree with you)....but anyone high up in a corporation better think of some great words to promote new products - or its bye bye like the PS3 guy!

Man, if I ever ran a corporation, I'd make it a rule not to use any flowery or overly fake-sounding language. I mean, I understand you love your new phone, Steve, but using pretty words isn't more likely to get me to buy one.

Thinking about what you were saying, I have to say: I would be more likely to buy this phone with words like this used to sell it.??. Call me a dumb ass if you will, but it makes me think there could be such a huge step in technology that "Truly Magical" would be the only way to describe it? Not to say I would not suffer buyers remorse afterward, but isn't Truly magical a good description of the very best gadgets?...The first video game, PONG and the very first Cell phones come to mind....

Well, if you want to listen to one, very biased, man's opinion, then go ahead. But until third parties are saying those things, I'm no more likely to buy a given product than I am to start flying like Neo. :P

Yea, using the word "Magical" might catch the attention of individuals who can only go on the kiddy rides at disneyland. Not that they would have ANY need for such a device. More like the plastic kind with candy inside.

That line has to be one of the more laughable things I have read in a long time. What would be "truly magical" would be your lowering some of your ridiculous prices. For example, $240 for a replacement 360W power supply for a PowerMac. Get real.

Eh... branded OEM stuff seems to always be far from the realm of reality. I always have to tell my VAR that I do not want HP branded crap. Twice as much for the same exact product.

However, I'll be the first to admit that Apple has a way of upping the price even more than most OEM's. Funny part is they convince their users that their product is technically superior to products better than it... somehow. I still laugh at the cinema display prices...

I've been saying this thing will bomb from day 1, but the battery life (if true) is quite impressive. The battery life on my current smart-phone is abysmal at best. I will never buy an Apple product, but here's to hoping it will improve the competition.

This happens to be out of my price range (not to say I don't want one), but one Apple product I'd love to be able to get is their OS. I'd like to be able to dual-boot alongside Vista on my own custom-built machine. Doesn't seem likely to happen soon, though.

Agreed. I disagree with Apple's plan to deploy this bad boy but the iPhone is a truly eloquent device who's specs are top notch. I don't like Apple but I do like the iPhone as a consumer electronic alone.

I'm just speculating here, but is it likely that over time Apple will dump the full sized iPod line in favor of merging the iPod and iPhone as one product?

I doubt it. The iPod is a CASH COW for them. The device is really simple and the drives cost no where near what they charge. I would bet they are pulling in a 75-100% return on their investment. (Considering costs and what not.)

Don't look for it to go away any time soon...

CASH COW yes, but this is the direction things are going it seems to me...We have had combo mp3\phones for a long time now but it seems most of them never caught on...Same with stand-alone mp3 DAP's. They didn't get popular until Apple\iTunes got into them. Now that people are comfortable with them, I don't see how in a few years you could even find a phone that won't play your music...Like cameras, every phone will come with one?

Yes, all phones probably will have "iPods" in them (if most don't all already), but it's not likely that all "iPods" or equivalent will all have phones in them. My KRZR Motorola phone has a java music player interface built in (and 2Gb ($16) of MicroSD flash added). Plays MP4 videos too (albeit at a worse resolution than even the iPod). But bought it as a phone (and because it looks awesome (Cobalt Blue)). Now only if had a processor worth a hoot (that still didn't use any battery power). It runs Linux.


Apple = Sony?

Just a thought when I saw the price tag of $599 for a phone.

Sure it might be better, clearer, last longer, and a million other things, but are people going to pay that much? Sounds like the PS3 and Sony's thoughts on how people would love PS3's because they do everything better, and the price isn't a big deal. So far it isn't quite working the way Sony intended (previous DT articles on console sales show few PS3's sold in comparison to cheaper consoles).

Well, you can get a free phone with most contracts, and I even saw a Razor phone for $30 with a contract the other day. I really can't see many people plopping down $599 for this thing, when they probably will just get a new phone in 2 years.

No, this will probably be a smash for a phone for a few reasons.

1. They are classifying it as a phone (when its a smartphone), which to many laymen makes it seem less threatening (as options tend to confused the technological illiterate)

2. Apple's fanboys will buy this, just like they bought the original, rather expensive for what you got ipods (that were apple only) that ended up being a hit.

3. The biggest splash in the cellphone business in a while was the Razor, which actually had been out for almost a year before it became popular (My mum bought one when she went to japan b/c she was promised it would work there) and started out with a $400 price tag, that eventually drooped to $200, and is now were its at today. Apple wants the same thing, but unlike the Razor at its original price point, this product has some merit to its price.

The main difference why this isnt (going to be) a repeat of sony's PS3 is because sony tried to sell a videogmae console, as a computer replacement (ie: making what should be a simple product that plays games, into something that sounds more complicated and intimidating to the buyer [and face it, tech savy is not the majority of people in the world]), while Apple is selling their iPhone as a phone, making the more complicated sound more everyday.

A cell phone is not a console. Cell phones are seen as status symbol by a lot of people. In that case their price tag is not that important. Motorola sold boatloads of the original RAZR when it was released (as a Cingular exclusive as well), and the phone wasn't cheap and not nearly as capable as the iPhone. Apparently, the coolness factor was enough.

For my personal case, I'd certainly like to get an iPhone to replace my cell phone AND my iPod. However, $600 is a bit too much. Maybe later down the road when the price drops and the capacity increases.

i agree with what your saying about cell phones being status symbols, most people have amazing phones and dont use half the features.. but there has to be a line where people will chose a cheaper or free phone with a 2 year contract over an expensive phone.. and i think 600 dollars is over that line (unless you rich of course, then price is not an issue)

My P800 has talk time of 13 hours, and stand by time of 400 hours. And it came out in 2004 I think.

I had mine for 3 years and the battery is still suprisingly good and I've never turned the phone off.

iPhone is overhyped if you asked me.

The iPhone is...
Nearly 1/3 the size
100x the memory
2x as many pixels
3x better camera
And costs 2/3 of the P800 at launch

It may not be revolutionary, but it certainly is a worthy "successor" to the P800 in terms of technology and capability don't you think?

Indeed, but for technology with a 3-4 year gap, I would not expect any less ;-)

Is it really 1/3 the size?

Although I have no interest in purchasing the phone, or getting into a "iPhone/Contract" discussion -

I really wish the battery & screen would have been made available on the 5th Gen video ipods. Would make for a creat feature - having 24 hour MP3 listening time, as well as a scratch resistant screen.

Will the glass make it more susceptible to cracking? AKA, you drop it and that $600 phone is worthless?

The worst part, if this is the case, is that AT&T will NOT insure this sucker. (They refuse to insure Smartphones, which this is.)

"DAMNIT!" will become a phrase popular with owners of this device.

Technically the iPhone is not a smartphone by most standards. You can't really install third party apps. Most apps are just Web2.0 applications that run on a server, not the actual phone.

Btw. Hopefully the iPhone works as a remote. I personally use Salling clicker to control my powerpoints and iTunes. Works great (Nokia E90).

I'm not going to buy this phone but I would really like to get my hands on this thing. The user experience with this phone is going to be great. I'm not a huge Apple fan but I got to admit their UI has always been impressive and usability always top notch. My worries were about the battery life and screen scratching and if they have solved those issues this phone can be a real success (and it will be).

Ps. Let's skip the "who on earth is going to pay X $ for a phone etc" discussion.
