Price is the largest factor for the popularity of Acer netbooks in Japan

In Japan, Acer netbooks are the most popular models according to TechOn’s analysis of a survey conducted by Japanese research company iShare Inc. The findings are similar to netbook sales numbers analyzed in a DailyTech article with Acer netbooks topping sales charts. The survey received responses from 422 people in their 20s to 40s and was conducted from Nov 14 to 17, 2008.

Roughly, 41.9% of the respondents said they have researched netbooks on the internet or at a retail store. For this question there was a gender gap with 52.4% of the male respondents and 29.1% of the female respondents having researched netbooks. The break down by age group was 34.5, 43.3 and 41.4% of for people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, respectively. Middle-aged respondents were slightly more interested in mini notebook PCs.

iShare asked those who have researched netbooks what manufacturer they find most attractive. Acer Inc. of Taiwan was the most popular maker, being named by 20.9% of them, followed by ASUSTeK Computer Inc of Taiwan at 19.8%. Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) came to third 13.6%, followed by Dell Inc 11.9%. HP was popular among women, while many in their 40s voted for Dell, according to iShare. The popularities of all the other manufacturers fell below 10%. Interestingly the highly acclaimed MSI Wind did not even make the top ten.

When asked why they found a specific manufacturer attractive, 59.3% cited price as the biggest factor followed by design at 34.5% -- other basic specifications at 22.0% and weight at 15.3%.

When iShare asked what factors the respondents seek in mini notebook PCs, less weight was cited as the largest factor at 80.8%, longer battery life at 73.9%, durability at 48.1% and "comes with Microsoft Office" at 34.6%  took the following positions.

It does not surprise me! The Japanese are smart! I bought an Acer notebook and couldn't be happier even though I thought the brand was sketchy before! It is definitely the best value for the money. A great machine! That's not to say that there aren't some other good ones...some of the EEE's....maybe the new Samsung's etc....there's the medicocre ones like the Lenovo's....and then there's the disasters like the HP(speed problem) or the DELL(everything problem)!

what makes the lenovo ones mediocre? i thought they looked nicer, and have the similar specs. and they were recently received a price adjustment putting it pretty much in line with the acers

I only say that about the Lenovo because in early reports there was some concern about heat. I don't know if more serious testing has confirmed or debunked that. The other reason was the big lack of an extended battery. Beyond that, it looks like a very nice machine, one I had been waiting for before I went for the Acer!

It's true. I bought an Acer a couple years ago because it was the cheapest laptop I could find online at the time. I never had experience with the brand, so I was not expecting much. Surprisingly the laptop still works today just as it did when I purchased it. If I did not already have a laptop now, I would definitely consider getting another Acer.

What are you talking about? Yeah, the Aspire One's good, but there's no problems with the Lenovo S10, the HP Mini 1000, or the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. I didn't really like the look/feel/build quality of the Aspire One, but look at it's price. The Dell's biggest issues are the movement of some keys and the slow smaller (4GB and 8GB) SSDs. The S10 and Mini 1000 both have 3-cell batteries. I don't know what disasters you've been reading about, but I haven't seen terrible reviews for many of these things, especially not the ones you're putting down.

As for me, I'm getting my Inspiron Mini 9 today. And I'm looking forward to using it.

There are no big problems with the s10 except lack of extended battery and possible heat problems. I differentiated that from the "disasters", like HP an Dell. HP's is a joke, great build, nice keyboard, ridiculous processor trying to run Vista. Beyond awful, especially at the high price.

The Dell is the worst choice of all, first Dell screwed the public around for months before the release (I and others were talked about it for some time on the Dell website), because they were behind their timetable trying to get it out. But sure, if you want re-arranged keys, MISSING keys, no hard drive option, lower battery life, all at higher price...webcam optional??? limited screen angle, some reports of flakey wifi all at too high a price (once you factor in the options to bring it up to par). Then by all means, buy one!

Not to mention the terrible reputation Dell has fostered the last several years over servicing, scam pricing etc. Actually they did the same thing with the Mini, announcing it was 99$ if bought with a laptop. Of course, they neglected to mention that they jacked up the prices of the laptop you must buy(overnight) by MORE than the full price of the mini!

In any case, I use the term "disaster", relatively, as with all adjectives. The margins seperating most netbooks are very small, but the Dell is one I would never recommend. Not with Acer, Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Samsung and others out there who are offering better products.

Oh and if HP get's a 6 cell model of it's new 1000 out and keeps the price in-line then it to looks like a great machine.

it is a great netbook. all around great quality, keyboard, oled screen, 16gb solid state drive, easy upgradability, 3hr battery life...$300 bucks.

I got mine a few months ago. I think I was one of the first with XP, 6 cell battery, 120gb drive for 400$. I was worried about Acer's quality but couldn't be more pleased for the money. Great machine, has done everything I've asked of it, better than I thought it would. Get's a lot of attention as well. I have found 2 flaws, the screen flickers a bit, when the HD comes on if it is at one of the 2 or 3 lowest brightness settings (out of 7 or 9 levels). It doesn't bother me now that I realized it was happening, but kept me wondering if it was my imagination at first! It also doesn't bother me because with the extended battery, I usually leave the screen turned up anyways, but still, an actual design flaw! And 2nd, the speakers are super tinny, but of course, I expected this(I used headphones anyways). 2 card slots is great, this baby has been "on" almost the entire 3 months, I just shut the lid and plug it when I get home. It seems unreal having a 120gb drive in this tiny thing. The wifi is more sensitive than my desktop replacement Compaq. Anyways, I hope it holds up in the long-term, so far, it has far exceeded expectations.

Acer One problems?

Does the Acer One still have wireless card problems? I know I've read about some of the cards disappearing from the device manager in Windows and not even showing in Linux.

I had to turn off power save mode in the card's driver (device manager > properties) before it would detect any networks.

cheap brand

With Acer you'll either feel good about your purchase or hate it to death. They use cheap components in their laptop so if you're lucky it might last past the warranty time. Then you'll call their horrible tech support and feel even more frustrated.

It's really a gamble with Acer.

Umm, no.

My Acer Aspire laptop is in its fourth year. Never had one problem with it. I've replaced the battery and that's it.

Acer's are no frills, cheap, but durable. Heck, the Japanese are well known for NOT buying cheap things that are not durable. So why do you think Acer is #1 there?
