Rock out like Master Chief with the Halo Zune

With the Halo 3 multiplayer beta starting today and the retail release just 132 days away, the Halo 3-related marketing machine is just getting started. One of the first cross-promotion kits is the special edition Halo Zune music player, now available for preorder from GameStop.

The special edition music player will be instantly recognizable by its grey finish with Halo-esque markings. The 30GB drive inside the Zune will come preloaded with artwork, music and videos from the Halo trilogy, plus episodes from the Red vs. Blue machinima.

Preloaded videos include various Halo 2 and 3 trailers, along with three “making of” Halo 3 documentary videos. The first six episodes of Red vs. Blue are also included, plus a special custom episode made just for Zune buyers.

The special Zune will also come with tunes to play right away, as the complete Halo original soundtrack and two volumes of the Halo 2 original soundtrack will be stored inside. Finally, over 120 different images, including game concept art, storyboards, paintings, and conceptual marketing imagery make up the free artwork portion of this Halo-themed Zune.

The special edition Halo Zune is priced at $249.99, just like every other Zune, and will ship on June 15.

Actually I think that design looks a hell of a lot better then all the other crappy colors available for the zune.

I bet it would be even cooler if the colors were inverted (black with white lines)

Might Just Have to Buy It

I've been looking at the Zune for quite some time and this might make me break down and buy it. Say what you will about it, but it definitely compares favorably to the iPod. I was hoping to wait until the 2G Zunes, but I don't know if I can pass up on owning the Halo soundtracks for free plus a limited edition skin.

I don't call $249 exactly free....
But it is a more tempting prospect now for sure.

Um, Zune's retail for $249, so yes, the soundtracks are free since they cost $40-50 by themselves.

If only...

it worked with any store and any media player software. If it did I would already own one.

I actually have a Zune

I honestly like it quite a bit. I am not a huge fan of the Zune Marketplace, the store needs a lot of work, but you can buy tunes from almost anywhere and put them on the Zune as long as they are wmv or mp3. The best thing about the Marketplace is the $15 a month all you can eat plan. Many people may not like this and they definitely don't have all the music you may want but I'll tell you that, for the price of one CD per month, I've been able to download and listen to songs that I would never have contemplated before. One example is "Bowling for Soup," hadn't really heard of them but now I have 2 of their albums on my Zune and really enjoy them. It is a great way to sample new music.

The video screen is better than my friend's iPod and I've been able to encode videos for the thing without major headaches. Overall, I'm very happy with it, I'm sure I would be happy with an iPod as well but I would REALLY miss the Zune Pass.
