Microsoft announced a new update for its Zunes today that adds some interesting new features to the devices. The update was announced last week and is now available to download. The update is for all Zune players and is free.
The biggest new feature that the update adds to the Zune line is the ability to stream and download music from the Zune Marketplace on the go. Zune users can also tag songs for later purchase while listening to them on the Zune's built-in FM tuner. To help users take even more advantage of the download feature on the go, Microsoft has teamed up with McDonald's restaurants and Wayport. Zune owners will get free WiFi access to the Zune Marketplace via Wayport WiFi hotspots located inside 9,800 McDonald's locations around the country.
Wayport vice president of business development and marketing Dan Lowden said in a statement, "Wayport is pleased to be working with Microsoft to make it easier for Zune users to access music on the go. Our ability to enable and manage applications and devices over converged networks creates exciting new opportunities for our clients to attract new customers whose digital lifestyle extends beyond their home and office."
In addition to the software update, Microsoft also announced exclusive colors for the Zune 16. The Zune 16 can be purchased in blue, red, pink, and green colors exclusively from the Zune Originals store. Only black can be purchased in retail outlets.
DailyTech reported in January of 2008 that McDonalds was revamping locations to compete with Starbucks with WiFi access and gourmet coffee. Many of the locations that went to the Starbucks competition arrangement lack a playground -- something usually associated with McDonalds.
