For those of you that like playing with fire, Zone Labs has just the ticket

For those of you running Windows XP Professional x64, Zone Labs has a new product for you to test out. The company has announced the availabilty of a preview version of their free ZoneAlarm personal firewall software for Microsoft's 64-bit operating system.

This is an early beta and comes with a lot of warnings from Zone Labs so BE CAREFUL:

This is for advanced technical testers only, and it will only install if you are running a 64-bit computing system with a full and current version of Windows XP Pro 64.

As this is an early preview version of the program, it may cause instability of your system or other technical issues. Prior to installing this ZoneAlarm preview, back-up all of your files and make sure you have copies of all other programs currently installed on your 64-bit PC in case you need to restore your system.

We do NOT suggest using Beta software unless you are familiar with editing the registry, manually removing the product, and so on. Remember that there is NO technical support for the Beta versions.

Download ZoneAlarm 6.5.588.000 (beta version, for XP x64 ONLY)

One of the reasons i didn't go to x64. I want zonealarm on my pc. Now only if they would port acronis trueimage over id make the switch.

Why would anyone want Zonealarm for their PC? Especially after the whole spyware bit? I personally don't trust the company anymore. There are plenty of better and more secure alternatives. There used to be Sygate but now it's owned by Computer Associates. CA's court case turned me off from the company.

There is Outpost, Kerio, Look N' Stop, etc. I use Outpost Firewall and Avast Anti-virus.

So thats your opinion. Zonealarm has been good to me. I don't think im the only one who likes the software. It has saved in more than once. Also with everything it comes with good firewall, antivirus, antispam (mailfrontier desktop) for all about $50...its a steal. Id like to mention that there antispam is the best. Compare this to like Pc-Cillin which has a great antivirus program eventhough its heavy on resource usage (100MB sometimes on a machine i had whic was with version 2005) but their firewall sucks. For all these utilities zonealarm takes up very little memory.

What spam are you getting, exactly? I have absolutely no problem with spam using my ISP's account or my free gmail...

Getting no spam is fairly easy... just don't be lazy about it the first time.

Configure firefox to only accept cookies from a list of trusted sites. Setup the adblock plugin correctly. This will eliminate almost any advertisement/popup/etc.

If you feel that you need an antivirus (useless compared to knowing your system well), use a good free antivirus like antivir.

Spend your $50 on a hardware firewall. Unless you have secret company documents on your computer, you don't need a software firewall. No one is looking to "hack" you.

It has saved you more than once? Saved you from what? What in the world were you doing?

I'll eat my words if you work for the RIAA and upset P2P'ers are sniffing at you every other second, but if you're just some guy surfing the web from his basement on a purely personal computer then any "security suite" is poopy.

I don't get spam emails either but running on a high speed connection without a firewall? I guess you're one of those people that thinks they have no viruses or spyware on their machines. And, if you did get a virus or spyware infection, you would just "know" it's there and how to remove it thoroughly.

These firewalls aren't robust enough and are crash prone.

Besides, I've seen no issues with running without any firewall or active av for years now. I run KAV once in a while to make sure. :)

I have both 64 bit and 32 bit versions of XP, regardless of the incompatible software I run 64 bit almost always as it is sooo much faster. Glad to hear this.

If ya like reinstalling windows then this is a must have! lol. Loaded trillian and windows freezes. Windows restarts and gives me a blue screen. Second time windows actually loaded. Yeah it's beta, I am not surprised but yeesh :)
