Intel still leads the pack, but ATI is gaining ground

The global market for PC graphics rose sharply in the first quarter according to Jon Peddie Research. While all segments saw small sequential drops in sales (not surprising given the holiday sales push during Q4), year-over-year shipments were up by a fair margin.

Compared to Q1 of 2005, desktop graphic shipments increased by 22.3% -- this represents a 33.7% increase for integrated graphics controllers (IGCs), 7.2% increase for standalone graphics. On the mobile side of things, IGCs grew a whopping 55.7% compared to Q1 '05 while discrete graphics grew just 3%. When all was said and done, 62.2% of the 55.6 million desktop graphics controllers sold were integrated while IGCs for notebooks accounted for 73.5% of the 19.2 million mobile graphics controllers shipped.

Intel can not by any means be seen as a leader in graphics performance in business applications and gaming, but the fact that IGCs are seen as adequate by many businesses and customers plays in their favor sales wise. ATI poses a serious threat to Intel's dominance in IGC shipments and has seen its share steadily rise over the past few quarters.  DigiTimes had the following to say about the mobile sector:

Intel led the mobile graphics market with 53.3% of the market, ATI held 36.4% and Nvidia followed with 6.6%. As on the desktop side, ATI expanded its overall mobile market share on increased shipments of integrated graphics shipments for notebook platforms. In the discrete mobile segment, however, ATI saw shipments decline on a quarterly basis while Nvidia saw shipments increase sequentially. Nvidia grew discrete mobile segment share from 20.3% to 25.0%. ATI's segment share fell from 79.2% to 74.6%.

I never realized how much bigger ATI is than NVidia. I assumed they were roughly equal in what they put out for graphics.

There must be something wrong with these figures, I can swear that I saw NVIDIA not being too far behind ATI a couple of months ago...

I think ATI/NV are close on after-market sales and not in IGCs

indeed, Nvidia and ATI are very close to each other in market share. ATI though does seem to hold a lot of the mobile graphics market. The article tells only about ATI and Nvidia mobile graphics market, not discrete graphics market, in which nvidia and ATI are very equal in market share.

The statement applies for the mobile market. If I remember correctly ATI started before nVidia in that market.

Even in the mobile graphics market I had no idea ATI was so much bigger. I knew in the desktop market it was 45/45 give or take.

NVIDIA use to focus solely on "standalone graphics" which are the cards you buy and put into the mother board (instead of the IGCs which are built into the board).

IGC is still dominated by Intel, with ATI not too far behind (though there really isn't a race between the two). AMD suggested that Intel is a head because it gives away mother boards with integrated graphics to computer makes when processors are bought. If you were making a computer would you buy a second mother board for the slight performance benefit?

On the portable scene, ATI has just been in the market longer, which is why they have 70%+.

Also, ATI has been around 5 years longer then NVidia, which is why they are better diversified.

Thing is, ATI and Nvidia seem a LOT more agressive in competition then Intel and AMD. I wouldn't be surprised if ATI and Nvidia continue to gain mobile graphics marketshare while intel slowly diminishes.

It depends. if the mobile trends continue to move more towards multimedia and entertainment than it is most likely that nV/ATi will start to seriously hurt Intel's dominance.
To add to some points brought up here: nv also doesn't have integrated Intel solutions, hence such discrepancy. With the advent of PCI-e in the mobile sector things have started to change.
Now, on the other side of things, it's rumored that Intel might get into "real" graphics(?)! Meaning we soon may see some capable add-in boards from anaother (big) player in the industry. It's going to get very interesting in the coming year, year and a half.
Ah, and yes, the over all market shares between nV & ATi are within a few percentage points. Each has significant lead in certain sectors.

Lets not foget this huge deal for ATI.

ATi's position in the mobile market is only going to increase. This is a great thing. I hope I can play the Half-Life 3 port on my phone in a few years when technologies catch up with each other.

*crosses fingers*

Can't be

This can't be true, because console fanboys keep saying PC gaming is dying, of course they've been saying that for over 10 years.
