The hunt for Yahoo's new CEO continues, with a few people likely candidates for the job
After Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang announced he would step down once the struggling Internet company found a suitable replacement, executives began looking for a new replacement.
The company reportedly has a small list of candidates it's considering, with Yahoo President Susan Decker and former Autodesk Executive Chairwoman Carol Bartz at the top of the list. Bartz is either a backup candidate or front runner for the job, and Yahoo insiders who wish to remain anonymous said the board is leaning more towards an outsider to take over the company.
During Bartz's tenure at Autodesk -- where she has been for 14 years until 2006 -- the company grew from a $285 million per year business into a $1.52 billion business at the end of 2006.
Former Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin and at least one other candidate are still in the running, but it is very difficult to tell who has the lead.
An announcement could come as soon as next week -- and Yahoo should have a final decision before the company's earnings report on Jan. 27.
The dominance of Google has led to Yahoo's prolonged suffering, and the struggling economy -- in which total advertising dollars are dwindling -- has led to further problems for the Sunnyvale-based company. Yang initially wanted to remain in control of Yahoo, but the company's board faced too much pressure to try and replace him because of failed business deals.
Microsoft said it didn't have interest in taking over the entire company, but the Internet search portion of Yahoo remains appealing. Steve Ballmer and company will likely wait until a new CEO has been chosen before attempting to discuss a possible buyout.
