PayPal and Yahoo are teaming up to compete against Google Checkout
Yahoo and PayPal are now using
a custom icon for online merchants who advertise on Yahoo and let
customers use the PayPal Express Checkout service. The Yahoo
PayPal Checkout, very similar to Google Checkout, is a new
service that Yahoo and PayPal announced earlier in the week.
The partnership between Yahoo
and PayPal appears to be a counter move against the Google Checkout
payment service, which currently offers perks to vendors who also
advertise on Google. The agreement will offer "a
streamlined purchase process" for PayPal customers while adding
further legitimacy to the Yahoo ad network.
When users search for an item
on Yahoo Search, some results shown include links to retailers that
are in the Yahoo Sponsored Search program – in the form of a blue
shopping cart icon. Users can then click the blue icon to be taken
to a secure purchasing site.
Both Yahoo and PayPal
have worked together in the past -- last year, Yahoo made PayPal the
lone third-party provider for the online program, and Yahoo became
the main provider of graphical ads on eBay's web site.
Perks include a free $100
credit card for Yahoo ads and free PayPal processing until 2008.
The new blue shopping cart
icons are already being used by some vendors. Vendors can join the
program for free.
