Somewhere under all these ads is a tech website!
Search company Yahoo! has launched Yahoo! Tech in an effort to make tech easy for all users
Yahoo! today launched tech.yahoo.com
in an effort to make technology more accessible to the technically
less inclined. Unfortunately the interface is clunky and overall it
passes off as some new aged PriceGrabber.
Product categories have little information and product pages
themselves are little more than full page advertisements with little
comments and a 4” square reserved for reviews. Let's also not
forget the unavoidable ad that shows up every time you load the main
page that you must skip or let play through to get anywhere.
At
the top of the page you are greeted with a cloud view of popular
search items. For a more informed browser this might be helpful, but
to someone looking for easy information on technology it’s just
confusing. You can save products you’ve viewed in a 3x3 grid to the
right to quickly compare the differences in products. I can’t
figure out how to use it so it sits there empty. As I looked across
the page I was greeted with even more ads for different services I
probably wasn’t interested in. Today’s “Top Features” is
entertaining to hover over, hey look it gets fatter!
"We are going to continue to work with them to make sure they understand the reality of the Internet. A lot of these people don't have Ph.Ds, and they don't have a degree in computer science." -- RIM co-CEO Michael Lazaridis
