Xbox One February update now avialble

If you are an Xbox One owner, the February update should now be available for your console (the update started rolling out last Friday). Microsoft says that the console now checks for updates automatically when it is turned off for users that use the “Instant On” function.
The update brings with it new features like the ability to see and manage the storage space on the internal hard drive. The update also allows the user to control the install lineup and mange the download queue.
The full list of improvements in the update include:
  • Ability to delete game and application save data
  • Improved installation and DLC management
  • Improved UI for accessing friends, achievements, messages, and party chat
  • Game DVR app to be included in the Xbox OneGuide as an app channel
  • Update to the boot progress indicators for system update
  • Improve consistency of UX for update & install progress
  • Separate game, application, and install queue lists
  • Addition of USB keyboard support
  • Improved NAT detection
  • Network Troubleshooter improvements
  • Blu-ray quality improvements
  • Significant performance and stability improvements
Microsoft is committed to providing continual updates for the Xbox One, just as it did with its predecessor.

Xbox One February Update Arrives with Numerous Improvements

How about arriving with some games...

Both the PS4 and XBOX ONE knew they were being released, they both should of had a better catalog when they hit the market

Because the companies that make the consoles are responsible for the release dates of games for said consoles.

First party games to an extent, they are responsible.

Neither console is worth picking up right now due to the lack of a games library.

DLNA fix?

Where is the damn fix for my Xbox one to be able to search, view, and play files off my DLNA server!!!!!!!!? I mean the fix where I dont have to cast it to my Xbox one from another Windows 8 device!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was basic functionality of the Xbox 360, so kinda pissed its not there for the Xbox One.

Why would you buy any console if you care about texture res? The PS4 isn't exactly a powerhouse either?

You're so right.

I have a foot in both camps or more precise considering the Sony vs. Microsoft thing I should really need an extra foot since I'm finding fun with PC's, Playstation's and XBOX's:-)

If all three platforms offered the same games I'd only running a PC, but since they are not and gaming is all about the games it hard to go without any of them. No question that better hardware makes for better games, but gameplay is king so really people should focus on that.

There is fun to be had even with old school titles like Angband, a a game which in many ways was the Diablo of the day back when even colors was not found on all systems (seeing a green dragon for the first time being represented by an actual green D was amazing).

I had a "foot in both camps" last gen. This gen I need to make a decision, $50 a year for PSN or $59 a year for XBL. Well, I already cancelled my XBL account (fortunately, I had an expired credit card on file...Xbox 360 wont LET you cancel your XBL account from the console, directing you instead to cancel via a webpage on a computer! I just moved my "renewal" to the expired card though, and got around THAT stupid requirement!)...and I just subscribed to PSN, even though I have yet to buy my PS4. I just downloaded Bioshock Infinite and XCOM: Enemy Unknown for my PS3. What were the free games again on XBL? Oh yeah, "Dead Island" and "Toy Soldiers"...both games you can get for $15 or less at the local used game store!

I only have so much money to spend on games and digital subscriptions this year, and Microsoft, due to having less compelling products and services, is losing my money...and if I have my way, they will never see ANY of it again!

Price comes out in PC favour in the long run. Games are way more expensive on consoles. This is even more true since most people need a PC anyway.

That might have been a relevant argument if phones abd PCs were a competing market, but they are not really. You cannot replace a phone with a PC, but you can replace a console with a PC.

It is unreasonable to compare the capabilities of a phone to a PC. The same cannot be said about comparing a console to a PC.

Zat you Mitch?

"You cannot replace a phone with a PC, but you can replace a console with a PC."

Except they really don't compete with PC's at all. PS4 and XBO compete with each other mostly, Nintendo secondly... People aren't debating whether to buy that PS4, XBO or a PC. People have their PC's and most gaming is still done on consoles.

The argument works for anything. I could just as easily say, driving games on the PS4 are better than they are on the XBO, and you may say "who cares, go drive a real car, its even more realistic." ... We are not driving a real car, we are talking about console games (We are not discussing PC, we are discussing the latest gen consoles)

Nice to know.

How are Halo, Killzone, Uncharted, Gears of War, Gran Turismo, Forza, God of War running on PC?

What are Destiny, 2nd Son and DriveClub system requirements on PC?

If you can confirm to me that all these games I love to play (or expect I will be loving) work on PC with no issues, I will gladly dump my consoles and focus on my gaming PC only.

Please, don't bother replying that there are OTHER games on PC instead. Yes, I do have gaming PC as well, and quite a few of those other games. But some of the best games around are platform exclusive, and for many of them, PC cannot replace console - just as phone cannot replace PC.

When I meant they compete, I meant that both are game machines meant to play serious games in a non-portable environment. I am not trying to claim one is better than the other, just that if graphics are your primary concern, the PC is easily the best choice.

Personally, I'd go for the platform that offers the game I like the best. If the PS exclusives do it for you, then by all means go for that one. None of the games you listed really excite me, mostly shooters and driving games. There are plenty of shooters and driving games on the PC, better ones, in my opinion.

There are specific games that I can't get on PC, but what game genres can I not get? I admit that I almost got a PS3 for Infamous, but I couldn't justify a console purchase for one game. Really, nothing else in the PS lineup caught my eye. If the "interactive movie" Last of Us is the game most people quote to me when they try to convince me that I should get one, they can keep it. I prefer gameplay over watching a movie.

I bought a Wii U because of all the consoles, that is the one that offers the most difference from the PC experience. None of the others are nearly as good for party games or for chilling with the kids. If I had to choose between Xbox One or PS4, I'd go with the One because of Kinect. It has the most potential of the two for fun, silly party games.

If I wanted the shooter experience, I'd play something like Metro Last Light, but I've gotten bored with shooters. I prefer driving games that are more realistic sims than arcade games, so I play SimRaceway. Or I'll throw on one of the Dirt games when I want something less complex.

My main genres are space sims, turn based strategy, and RPGs. All of those are lacking on consoles.

You mean one 8 core AMD CPU is clocked slightly lower on an area that isnt even remotely the bottleneck? Yes, what of it?

Of these 2 consoles, there is one area that is a gaping hole of a bottleneck - the RAM speed of the XBO. The rest all line up pretty well.

The final deciding factor will be the games, not the weaker or stronger GPU. Most console gamers are not as knowledgeable about hardware specs as PC gamers. In the end, they will look similar enough that most people won't notice. I still maintain that if graphics are the sole factor someone is basing a purchase on then they would be a PC gamer.

It all boils down to franchises. God of War fans will get a PS4. Halo fans will get an Xbox One. Some people had their minds made up long before the new systems were released. The rest will buy whichever one has the best new games, if they aren't already swayed by existing franchises. Titanfall looks like it has enough hype to sell a lot of Xbox systems, but for the life of me I can't see why. It looks like a generic shooter with mechs. I still haven't seen a game announced for either new system that would be a must-have for me.

I'm betting the Wii U will have a much bigger year this year than last year. It will never catch the other two, the weak launch has tainted it, but some of the big guns of Nintendo franchises are finally launching. Nintendo needs to do more to showcase the new gameplay elements added by the second screen. I know that the PS4 can do this with the Vita and the Xbox One can use Windows phones or tablets to do it, but only the Wii U has it built in so devs will know they can utilize it on all Wii Us. Second screen will never be more than an afterthought on the other two systems.

"The final deciding factor will be the games, not the weaker or stronger GPU. Most console gamers are not as knowledgeable about hardware specs as PC gamers"

What are you even talking about? ALL "AAA" titles are released on both, always. The most popular titles are made on all platforms, period... And "most console gamers" buying a lesser system does not make that lesser system any better. It's still slow, the memory bandwidth is ridiculously low for a modern gaming system period. No exclusive titles, sales #'s or uneducated newbs will change that. If you want it , go for it, but don't cheer for mediocrity. It will just get you more mediocrity on the next round.

RE: Any fix for...
By atechfan on 2/18/2014 9:28:11 AM , Rating: 2
So God of War and Last of Us and Infamous are not AAA games? I may not have even liked 2 of those 3, but I'd be hard pressed to not include them in the big-budget AAA category. But I guess they weren't because they were not released on both systems.

It is the exclusives that sell systems. Cross platform games might have huge numbers due to a wider potential audience, but they are not what tips the balance from one system to another by the very fact they are available on both. If I had an Xbox I wouldn't have gotten a PS in order to play CoD, but I might have gotten one to play Infamous.

Are you trying to say that exclusives do not sell systems?

No, surely they do for some people, but that is your "narrative" that you put in there, not mine. Here is what I am saying. "The memory bandwidth is ridiculously low for a modern gaming system period. No exclusive titles, sales #'s or uneducated newbs will change that. If you want it , go for it, but don't cheer for mediocrity. It will just get you more mediocrity on the next round."

Look, these consoles are roughly the same in most areas, CPU, GPU, etc, all match a decent mid range PC. The ONLY differing factor is the insane lack of memory bandwidth on the XBO. Stop defending it.

You said ALL AAA titles are cross-platform, to try to make some case that technical merit is the deciding factor in console sales. No, it is, and always has been, games. I'm not defending the memory bandwidth gap. Show me one post were I did. I'm not even trying to be pro-Xbox or anti-PS, I'm agnostic on that front. I'm just trying to get the point across to you that most console gamers are not into technical specs. They just want to play games. Whichever system has the most popular exclusives will sell, just like last gen.

Agreed. It's not just about games, but also about which platforms your friends play on as well. My dad works with a groups of people who played CoD on PS3 and so for a while he was considering getting one because of that. It had nothing to do with whether or not the hardware was better, just that the people who knew played it on that one.

I also know a number of people who have purchased PS3 just for the exclusives. My brother bought a PS3 and wants a PS4 because of Final Fantasy. He couldn't otherwise care less about what hardware is in the consoles.

We can even go a step further and I made my purchase of a Wii solely for the exclusives on that console too. The Wii was clearly the loser in last gen's hardware, outperformed vastly by the 360 and PS3, but it had some good titles that I wanted. I'd happily bear through the lack of higher quality graphics to play Metroid Prime 3 and Skyward Sword. Nintendo is a prime example of how games sell the consoles.

By atechfan on 2/18/2014 1:48:27 PM , Rating: 2
If you look at history, the weaker console often ends up being the winner for that gen. All the way back to the beginning, this is true. The Intellivision was more powerful than the Atari 2600. The TurboGraphix 16 and the NeoGeo were more powerful than anything they competed with, both failed though. The Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Xbox were all more powerful than the PS2. The Wii was significantly weaker than the 360 or PS3. Seems like hardware prowess actually has very little to do with overall sales.

I think it's reasonable to expect that current gaming hardware is capable of handling 1080p resolution with relative ease.

My PC has aging ATI 6870 card, and I can still play all games in 1080p. I cannot do AA in new(er) games, and because of only 1GB of RAM, I cannot go for highest textures... but outside of that, I can get pretty much every other eye-candy.

To my knowledge, PS4 graphics are somewhere between ATI 7850 and 7870. Quick googling shows that this combination is, depending on scenario, up to 40% faster than my card. Important thing is that it never dips below my card's performance, and with 8GB of GDDR5, it can easily get 2GB or more for video, removing textures limitation I'm having.

So basically, I expect that it will be able to drive everything in 1080p with good details and no AA (or even with AA in some scenarios) while keeping comfortable framerate.

XBO graphics should be based on ATI 7770 - 7790. 7790 with 1GB GDDR5 is 10% slower than 6870 in Crysis Warhead, for example. But this is 7790 with GDDR5. Reduce performance to somewhere between 7770 and 7790, and cripple memory bandwidth to DDR3 levels, and you will get graphics that just isn't comfortably in 1080p zone... and this is on console's release. In 2 years time, it will be very, very obsolete. And it should last for good 6 years or more.

Exactly... The lack of ability to perform at 1920x1080 is going to bite it. These things are supposed to last 5-7 years. Imagine still gaming at 1280x720 on an XBO in the year 2020... [Cringe]

It really doesn't matter, I've played a few of the same games on both systems and the differences are barely discernable. The better hardware argument is moot if all the games basically look the same in the end. So far they all look great so get whatever system, or both, and enjoy.

We all know it's not about graphics anyway, it's about gameplay. So, whoever releases the best games will win, not whoever pushes the GPU the most.

I disagree with your assertion that Sony always attracts the better games.

Stupid argument anyway, I own both consoles because I like them BOTH. But in my experience so far, nothing that I've played on the PS4 has had a clear real world advantage over the One version. I've actually preferred the One version so far out of anything that is also offered on the PS4, probably because the controller is still 10x better. The technical arguments about 'OMG it's only 720p, and OMG, I can't believe it can't do 30,000 fps all the time, and OMG, where's my 16xFSAA' can kiss my ass, as it obviously doesn't detract from the actual gaming experience.

Side by side, playing the games, they look identical to me. All this other crap is just banter for kiddy console wars.

Yes I'm sure you've set up two of the exact same TV sets, calibrated the same, and have done objective "side by side" benchmarks of both consoles.

People who get paid to do this for a living have, and they show you as being wrong.

And the developers are coming out in favor of the Playstation 4, which is perhaps more important than anything.

Not only that developers prefer PS4 platform - it sells more. Which, I think, is major motivator for developers to select one platform as their development platform, and settle down for porting (more or less successfully) to other platforms.

Or to completely ditch other platforms.

PS2 wasn't even the nicest platform to develop - hardware was quirky, especially compared to pretty much PC-grade standard and more powerful original Xbox.

And yet, we all know which platform received more exclusive titles.

Back to the future, PS4 is selling more AND is preferred by Developers.

Double down, basically.

Doubt MS will suffer if at all, even if that means releasing another model with slightly better hardware, not really realistic thinking and it's not even necessary at this point. Seriously, the 360 spanked the hell out of the PS3, so maybe it's Sony's turn this time. Fine and great by me as I have both so it really doesn't matter to me.

I've done the side by sides and there's no real difference unless you're paid to look for a difference and cater to techtards looking for consolz warz.

Also, I never said "love", I said "like". I liked that I had a PS3 just in case - it also did 3D bluray which was nice - I hardly used it for gaming other than the Uncharted and GoW series...which wasn't saying much....

That's interesting. My 360 collected more dust than my PS3, until it actually worked correctly for a span of a week. Then, I sold it. It was my 4th xbox.

Hey, if you prefer to play a console for it's branding, rather than it's quality, be my guest. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. I prefer to get the most for my money.

Most of the Xbox 360 issues were heat related. This generation, it is Sony that is having the heat issues. MS over-engineered the cooling to avoid a repeat of the Red Ring fiasco. You can claim that MS did all kinds of things wrong with the One, but inadequate cooling isn't one of them.

Sony, on the other hand, went the Apple route of form over function. Have you seen the IR images of PS4s? I'd be surprised if we don't start seeing heat related deaths soon.

Sony is also in financial trouble. They are selling off divisions to avoid bankruptcy. I'd be skeptical of buying a system from a company without a shaky future. I thought the Dreamcast was easily the best console of its generation, but I didn't get one because I was worried that Sega was in trouble.

I found this at

"We’re a little more dubious on the thermal failure front, though. In testing, Digital Foundry found that the Xbox One and PS4 have very similar thermal characteristics — in fact, rather than being significantly cooler than the PS4, the Xbox One’s case temperature is actually higher. During games, the Xbox One case temperature (directly above the CPU) was 49 degrees Celsius; the PS4 was just 44 degrees Celsius. The PS4 is slightly noisier under load, but you won’t notice the difference from more than a meter or two away (i.e. sitting on your couch). It would seem that all of that extra space in the Xbox One doesn’t serve much purpose.

Xbox One, in pieces [Image credit: iFixit]
Xbox One, in pieces [Image credit: iFixit]
It’s worth noting that load temps of under 50C are incredibly low for a PC-like system — the AMD APU in both consoles is probably rated to work faultlessly for years at 70C or more. Judging by the similar load temps, we would argue that the Xbox One’s increased size isn’t to reduce the chance of thermal failure — rather, it’s a sign that Microsoft’s engineering team simply wasn’t good enough to design a console that was small, light, and had good thermals."

What do you have?

I don't give a crap about the branding, I just go with personal experience. And with that, the 360 absolutely crushed the PS3 when it came to value for ME.

So why wouldn't I think MS would just improve on that value? Well, so far they have. When more games start coming out, we'll know for sure. It's just too early to tell right now.

And like I keep repeating, I'm a gaming enthusiast, I have all of it, and I want all of it to succeed because that's what we need for the experience to keep improving.

That is fine... but also highly individual.

My case was kind of the same, but opposite. I played Halo 1 and 2 on PC and wasn't too interested in continuing, for some reason. Not that I didn't like Halo, I just didn't like it enough to influence my console choice.

I also played Gears on PC. At the time I was hopeful sequels will come to PC; this is probably the only franchise I regret not playing more.

Eventually, I wanted console to play games other than PC strongholds - 3rd person action adventures, platforms, driving. I found PS3 offering more on that front, and Blu-ray was nice addition. I swapped consoles with friend for some time, tried Halos, Forza, Fable... and never regretted my choice.
