Xbox Live Video Marketplace to launch a little lightweight in Canada, Europe

For over a year, the Xbox Live Video Marketplace offers Xbox 360 owners nearly immediate access to a wide variety of television shows and movies, some of which in high-definition, making for an accessible and convenient video download service – unless of course you live outside the U.S.

Xbox 360 users in Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Germany will finally get to check out what their American counterparts have been spending their Microsoft Points on since launch in November 2006.

According to GamesIndustry, films available at launch include 300, Clash of the Titans, Demolition Man, Mars Attacks!, The Matrix Trilogy and more. The rental charge for standard definition films is 250 MS Points, while the high-definition version commands 380 MS Points. Interestingly, the prices are lower than the 320/480 MS Points level for the U.S. Xbox Live Video Marketplace, though Joystiq proposes that the difference in pricing reflects the current strength of the Euro.

Pricing for Canadian Xbox 360 users will be 310 MS Points for older films, 440 MS points for newer releases, with HD versions going for 460 points and 660 points, respectively, according to Canoe.ca’s Load This blog.

Sadly, the Xbox Live Video Marketplace for Canada and Europe will pale in comparison to the breadth of content available to U.S. customers. While the U.S. has access to hundreds of TV series and movies, the Marketplace available in the new territories will be made up of only about 35 films.

Those outside the U.S. will just have to be content with the small selection of movies, at least for now. “We don’t have any answers right now, but as with the movies we’re always evaluating every opportunity,” Scott Nocas, global marketing manager for Xbox Live Marketplace, said to Canoe.ca. “We thought, ‘Let’s focus on the best experience with a really popular offering, and then we can roll out other content as we go along.’”

Umm Canadian prices...

Why in gods name are the prices so damn high?

We already overpay for the MS point here in Canada, with 1400 for 19.99CAD, compared the US 1600 pts for 19.99USD. Including the exhcange rate we still get overcharged.

Then there's the gigantic 37.5% increase in cost for the movie. I was so looking forward to this, but there's no way I am paying $10 to rent a high-def movie, then wainting for it download.

The whole notion of adjusting MS Points cost to different markets based on exhange rate is completely false. The whole reason MS Points are used in the first place was to avoid that. The exchange rate correction happens when one buys the points at a retail location or on the xbox. Obviously the price discrepencies are due to different licensing costs in the varying regions but the Canadian one is ludicrous. They can either change it or take back the marketplace as far as I am concerned.

You forgot to say...

"and only have 24 hrs to watch from start to finish."

Dvds you rent you can watch over and over again but not with "Live" rentals

The problem is that there WILL be people biting on to this. For the pure convinience of staying home.

Services like this are supposed to lead the digital distribution era. By at least using comparable costs. All this will fuel is Netflix and such as long as they have a good supply of hard media.

It's almost like what happened with CD vs MP3 in the record buisiness :(

I mean, Streaming HD content media over the net isn't Rocket-science anymore. Just a matter of bandwidth and being able to decode the stream fast enough. Charging the asked prices for that is hillarious for a 24h rental.

I also wonder what will happen when my USB stick gets, say, like 64 TB for US$99,- and my need for movies ended at around a thousand Full HD/BluRay titles.. Music could take more space, if we didn't make such great shortcommings to sound quality that comes with MP3 even though not useless.

Will the audio industry come up with something that can regain their lost profits from people copying MP3s, by finally releasing a 16/24bit encoded and secure format bringing full CD quality (which IS better than MP3), to the listeners?

Only playable by a "Music4You"-chip installed to whatever downloads content, it could be a solution for high quality audio like HD(MI) is for high definition video.

What Apple acomplished with the launch of iPod, I think, was a master piece. Bringing so much original music to the customers for US$0.99/song with the content being there/getting there quick.

Now, to conclude, if the Movie buisiness could pull the same trick, and offer ALL movies for US$2.99, THEN it'll work out.

Would you believe I was complementing you by repeating what you said?

Sorry.

If it's anything like the US version you have 14(ish) days to let it sit on the HD, then yes 24hrs of usage after the first play... Odd policy, I wish it was different.. But as pointed out elsewhere in the thread it's convinient, and they have a decent number of HD movies (all in good quality).

.. seems to be "a-bit" on the high side for the "ownership" for 24 hours.

But then again:

I don't know what the problem is.
Here in the UK, it costs roughly £3.75 to hire the latest films out for 2 nights from BlockBusters... okay, maybe less for older films and you get them for 5 days or so... but I've never once watched a film a second time in the period I've had it hired out! 2 nights or more is just pure convenience in case something comes up one evening. You have near enough the same convenience with XBL as you don't need to watch it the same night you hire it. Granted, if you begin watching it and something comes up, you need to finish the viewing before the expiry period, but hey ho, just plan things better.

This is a cheap way into HD movies for those who have HD TVs... my question is, are they 720p or 1080p?

Clash of the titans!!!!!!!
