New splash screen for Xbox Live Canada

A listing of movies new and old

"300" offered in two different languages and resolutions
Xbox Live Video Marketplace a little bare for international launch

After more than a year of existence only on the U.S. market, the Xbox Live Video Marketplace officially expanded today into Canada, UK, Ireland, France, and Germany.

Unfortunately, gamers in Canada and Europe will have to set lower expectations for their local versions of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace.  While the U.S. has access to hundreds of TV series and movies, the Marketplace available in the new territories will be made up of little more than 30 films.

Reasons behind the slimmer selection outside of the U.S. are due to language requirements and licensing issues. As each country has its own language and content laws, Microsoft must secure individual rights for the content available on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

“Any time we bring something new to Xbox Live Marketplace we want to make sure that it’s an amazing consumer experience,” said Scott Nocas, Global Marketing Manager for Xbox Live. “We make sure we have a ton of content and we make sure we have local content. We also want to bring it to multiple countries and, right now, we really wanted to focus on the movies because we felt that was really one of the better offerings that Xbox in the U.S. had.”

Speaking specifically on the Canadian market, Nocas added, “We’ll be updating movies on a monthly basis. As new releases come in from our partners, we’ll put them up on the same day that everyone else has it, and we’ll be adding to the Library titles. At launch, the U.S. Video Store had 37 titles, but we now have over 300 movies. So, for Canada, we plan to aggressively add movies as fast as we can.”

Movies such as 300, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ocean’s 13, The Reaping, Delta Farce, Air Guitar Nation and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are now available on the Canadian Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

No Shock

Well, given the lack of much content in the iTunes Store outside of North American I can't say that this is especially shocking news even if Microsoft is happier dancing to the media companies beat. This is what sucks about a lot of these services - if you live in the US then the selection is great but if you are outside then you get little and consider yourself lucky. In the XBox's favor is the fact that it has a useful purpose outside of managing digital media (legend has it that it plays games too) whereas the AppleTV, for example, is entirely useless outside of the US as there is nothing to use it with (or damn near it). The language issue should not be an issue if the media has already been distributed in a country (e.g. shown in the cinema or released on DVD) so I guess we can blame the idiocy of licensing "issues".

Licensing just makes me angry even thinking about it.

Perhaps you mean USA? Canada is part of NA as well :)

What a selection for Canada...

Something tells me 300, TMNT and Ocean's 13 will be the only ones downloaded...maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre if its the original one, which I doubt is the case.

Yeah, pretty slim pickings, but I expected as much. If you're already a subscriber to a service such as Roger's Digital Cable then you have access to Rogers On Demand. If anything XBL Video Marketplace just adds more selection to our already weak video on demand services.

Just to note, I noticed that most videos on XBL are the exact same price as their counterparts on Rogers On Demand ($7.99 for HD movies)

Prices

OK, what are the prices for these? I see 580 in that picture for the HD version, how much is that in pounds or Canadian dollars? Also are these to rent or buy, or both?

I guess I can't speak for CA or UK, but here in the US it's 80pts/$1.

UK, STILL no HD trailers.

Even given all the legal copywrite hoo-hah over different regions, why can't Microsoft bloody release downloadable HD trailers via xBox Live?

Poor show, Apple show the way in this regard.
