Xbox beats Wii and PS3 in June

The annual E3 video game expo was held last month and there were some impressive new unveilings. Among the notable products was the Kinect accessory for the Xbox 360 that turns the player into a motion controller. A number of new video games were also unveiled.

One of the most important of the hardware devices unveiled at the show was the new redesigned Xbox 360, which was quickly dubbed the Xbox 360 Slim by many. The new Xbox 360 added in a new thinner profile, more storage with a 250GB HDD, five USB ports, and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi. The console carries the same $299 price tag as the older fat machine.

The redesign and new features have spurred sales of the new Xbox 360, just as Microsoft undoubtedly hoped. According to the latest figures from NPD Group for the gaming market in June 2010, the Xbox 360 surpassed the Wii in sales for June taking it to the number one spot for consoles, not counting portables.

If sales of portable systems are figured in, the Nintendo DS still dominated the console market. NPD shows that console hardware sales grew by about 35% compared to June of 2009. However, the market for gaming as a whole declined thanks to reduced gaming software sales compared to June of 2009.

NPD predicts that interest in the PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect accessories will spur hardware sales. The new Xbox 360 sold 451,700 units for the month, the Wii sold 422,000 units, and the PS3 moved 304,800 units. The Nintendo DS sold 510,700 units and the PSP sold 121,000 during June.

Sales attributed to redesign?
By GWD5318 on 7/16/2010 9:17:03 AM , Rating: 2
Although I'm sure that the redesign of the Xbox360 is part of the reason sales have spiked, I'm much more inclined to believe that the discounted older designs have much more to do with it.

An Arcade model @ $149 is a very tempting product. It's currently the lowest priced "Next Gen" console on the market.

Actually they are decidedly 'current gen' right now

There has to be something newer for it to be "last gen".

I'm all for PC gaming, and think PC gaming is way better than console gaming.

But a PC isn't a console.

Therefore, the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii are "current gen" consoles. There haven't been any "next gen" consoles announced yet, so the term "next gen" can't apply to anything anymore. (I'm willing to accept "next gen" referring to a generation during its first year; which none of the three are, so that doesn't apply.)

Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube are "last gen".

Dumbest argument ever. What is the current gen of consoles then?

Consoles are "who cares" gen, as in, "Who cares what hardware drives it, as long as there's cool games?"

So last gen that developers dont even bother using the ancient GPU in the PS3, they just do it all in the Cell.

Incorrect. The fact of the matter is that developers are able to extract some amazing visuals from old hardware. Nobody that matters cares HOW it's done.

I am holding out for the X-Box 720

I think it should be called X-Box 1080 (much more marketable)...

It's sad but to make it even more marketable they should call it iBOX , people wouldn't even care if it had some kind of rrod. They could even get away with saying it's because your holding the control wrong! :)

I guess you missed the quotes, then?

Here, let me lay it out for you more plainly: "It's currently the lowest priced "marketed as Next Gen, but is really Current Gen, soon to be Last Gen" console on the market".

My point is that, regardless what you call it, it's still a pretty good deal.

Don't be silly, you can't have fun unless you have nothing but the newest and the bestest techno-whizbangs.

Really?? Microsoft and Sony have BOTH said that they expect a long lifespan for these consoles, on the order of 10 years. *Newsflash* - you are only half way through this gen. Prepare to be fed up for a long while.

By jabber on 7/16/2010 1:35:15 PM , Rating: 2
Nope, they say 10 years but soon one will announce a new console and then the other two will have to show their cards pretty quick.

I'm betting 2011 will see new consoles announced.

Another year to 18 months is going to see these consoles as very creaky. They aint going to last 10 years as the premium line product.

I expect MS to support the 360 for longer after its successor is out compared to its first console.

I can see them announcing the consoles, but not releasing them until like 2013.

By mac2j on 7/17/2010 3:07:11 AM , Rating: 2
I think we're looking at 2013-14 for the new consoles.

MS and Nintendo haven't released anything development-wise and Sony - JUST - started to let it leak they were interfacing with developers on the PS-4 design to make sure its more developer-friendly and they'll have a lot more games sooner than with the Cell.

Ideally Sony probably wants to be able to package a fast multi-core CPU, 3D 1080p (min) capable GPU, a 3D capable Blu-ray player, and an SSD in addition to the usual stuff into their next-gen console for under $500... so about 1/3rd of what it would cost now.

By afkrotch on 7/19/2010 10:29:05 PM , Rating: 2
Really, development for a next gen console wouldn't be all to hard. Sony can slap in two faster cell processor, a new gpu, faster blu-ray drive, and 500 gig hdd.

MS can throw in two new Xenon cpu, blu-ray, and a 500 gig hdd. That right there is 6 cpu cores and 2 gpu cores. Have the gpus crossfired or something.

As consoles become more PC like, it becomes less costly to create a new one.

I know a guy that went through three significant PC upgrades just for Crysis, and was still never satisfied. Sounds like a deal.

No upgrading can ever make Crysis a satisfying game.

By rburnham on 7/16/2010 2:27:52 PM , Rating: 2
I hope not. I think all three consoles are really just hitting their strides. The Wii is finally seeing some solid games from the Nintendo franchises, the PS3 is getting some neat exclusisves like 3D Dot Game Heroes, and the 360 has such a great social structure. I hope all three stay around for awhile.

Minimal flame wars?

4 years ago a news post like this would have stirred up plenty of fanboyism and flaming. I like to think we've matured as internet gaming console users (even though I know that is not true)

Shut up, fanboy! Don't attack my console of choice!

j/k ;)

Ooooh... pretty.
By rburnham on 7/16/2010 2:46:16 PM , Rating: 2
I have to admit that the redesign of the 360, especially with the wireless feature, is making me give serious consideration to buying one. It would probably just end up as my "social console" mainly for Rock Band and the PS3 would remain for the single-player stuff. Tempting!

We'll see how long it'll be before we get the Red Dot of Death...

I could actually care less... but hopefully for 360 users, they'll have less headaches now.

I don't think I have ever read a more pointless and pathetic comment on here as yours.

What also makes me chuckle is how this is the first time we have seen an article about console sales for a while, at least as far as I can recall and in the main news feed.

Why is that?

By zebrax2 on 7/16/2010 9:19:53 AM , Rating: 2
I do agree that his post is more or less as it is nothing more than a flame bait but the sad thing is you went on acting like a fan boy anyway questioning the article like that

By Aloonatic on 7/16/2010 10:44:40 AM , Rating: 2
Please explain why anything what substantiates your insulting claim that I am acting like a fanboy?

I think that it's a reasonable question to ask, as this article has just appeared from nowhere, for what reason?

XBOX has outsold PS3 several times. Why would "PS3 FANS" get upset about this time?

By quiksilvr on 7/16/2010 9:28:46 AM , Rating: 2
Haters gotta hate
Trollers gotta troll

Obviously when you sell a console for $150, it's going to sell better than the $200-$300 consoles.

By BSMonitor on 7/16/2010 12:57:45 PM , Rating: 2
Hence Mom and Dad out shopping for a console for the kiddies... $200 for Nintendo or $300+ PS3, XBOX360 (back at the beginning)

Guess which one wins. Even though they have no idea what the 3 are about.

By SPOOFE on 7/17/2010 12:50:35 AM , Rating: 2
Nah. Contrary to popular belief, most parents actually hear their kids. The truth is the parent's purchase is going to be swayed more by what THEY want to play when Junior's asleep.

XBOX has outsold PS3 several times.

I don't believe the 360 has even twice as many units sold as the PS3, much less several times.

By Douglasp on 7/17/2010 5:03:01 AM , Rating: 2
Are you kidding me?? I mean you come to a tech and information site and dont realize that the 360 has outsold the ps3 everymonth this year and head to head every year??
These are official NPD numbers. You can do that math. I guess PS3 fans do cry.

Someone has never heard of Japan then because the PS3 has been slowly beginning to outsell even the Wii at times.

North America, specifically the US is NOT the be all end all of the gaming public.

I enjoy the way that any comment questioning anything on here has to be from a PS3 "fanboy" and they have to be crying. You do realise that comments like your last sentence just make you look childish and pathetic, right?

Anyway, just to back you up, the xBox was on sale for a whole year before the PS3, so it will undoubtedly have sole many more units, but I think that Sony will not be crying too much themselves as at that time the PS2 was selling well, as your chart points out, during that time so they proabaly weren't losing too much.

I'm not sure why people get so excited over these numbers in particular. The only time when sales figures matter are when they are so low that they risk the console being abandoned by developers, or the manufacturer is not able to afford to sustain production, marketing etc.

Anyway, back to your "fanboy" wars as you battle it out to be 2nd place. Never has 2nd position been so valuable it would seem? :-/

By afkrotch on 7/19/2010 10:35:07 PM , Rating: 2
Actually there was a month or two, where the PS3 overtook both the Wii and 360. Think it was when the Slim released and the prices dropped.

Course any time there's a price drop or new version, sales always take off.

And in adult world, we can own all three consoles.

So there.

Very true - I own a gaming PC, Wii and a PS3. With the cost of the Xbox360 coming down a lot, and it's new leaner, hopefully non-RRoD'ing form, I think I'll also pick one up just to play the exlusive games (only Halo and GoW spring to mind though I'm sure there are others that I'll grab).

Just an aside, my PC and PS3 get the most workout (about equal at the moment, though generally it's the PC that does the most gaming) and my poor old Wii hasn't be switched on in months. Will have to show it some love soon :D

I own the PC, 360, and PS3. I had a Wii, but got rid of it. Didn't play it enough to bother having it take up space.
