Xbox 360 consoles recalled for HDD-related defect

Gaming blog Kotaku’s correspondent from Down Under reports that EB Games of Australia has issued a recall on all of its Xbox 360 Premium consoles.

According to the report, EB Games managers were instructed late June by head office to test every single one of its consoles, but are now ordered to return entire inventories from stores. Managers were also told to remove all 360 promotional material and dummy boxes from their stores.

New, quality assured Xbox 360 Premium consoles are supposedly now entering channels, and will be in stores by Wednesday. Currently, nearly every location listed by the EB Games Australia website shows the Xbox 360 console as “Sold Out.”

Strangely enough, the supposed defect that afflicts the recalled Xbox 360 consoles has nothing to do with the dreaded “Red Ring of Death,” but rather is assumed to be related to the hard disk drive. Consoles without a hard disk drive bundled – the Core systems – are not part of the recall.

Earlier this month, Microsoft stunned the industry by announcing that it would extend the warranty on Xbox 360s afflicted with the Red Ring of Death to three years following DailyTech’s report on Xbox 360 failure rates. Xbox 360 defects have also been reported to be related to the optical disc drive scratching media.

Why only EB games? What about Kmart, Target and what not?
I don't have EB games here, the closest store is 8 hours away in Adelaide, but its surprises me how one store does a recall but the others don't, and a quick trip down to Kmart this morning showed that there were a couple of Xbox 360's on sale (Premiums).
And has this Hard Drive issue occurred elsewhere in the world?

Well it could be that a certain set of batches were affected, and all those batches went to EB games Australia, but I somehow doubt that happened.

I imagine that EB Games are more up to date with gaming related issues (such as 360 reliability) than stores such as Kmart, Target etc.

I would assume its a certain batch as well. I am fairly certain that if it was not batch related, that the US retailers (EB, Gamestop, Target, Walmart, etc) would have done the same thing. And if it did effect US retailers, I'm sure it would make an noticable splash in the media.

So at this time, I think its safe to assume that its a particular batch that was shipped out to that part of the globe.

It could also be a voluntary recall, they probably have an in house warranty and it is costing them more to constantly send out and fix the xboxs than it is to recall everyones. Also good pr even if they are losing a bit of money.

i wonder why they speak of the hard drive though and what exactly is wrong with them, i have not heard of issues in north America with hd's

once again...

Which console

Do we know which console it was that was being pulled? The Premium & Elite have different hard drives, and there are also standalone drives that you can purchase for these.

Im sure in this regard it is batch related, but which HD - 20GB or 120GB?

The 20 GB hard drive had the problems because it says in the article that the Premium systems were recalled and they have the 20 GB hard drive, not the Elites.

PS3 is the @*!#

No wonder the XBOX 360 is a miserable failure in Japan. The Japanese want quality and technology, and also nice styling, not the unattractive rattle-trap XBOX 360 that scratches disks, locks up, and looks like an old ReplayTV unit. I love my PS3, and it is absolutely flawless in every respect. The XBOX360 is for Western people who don't know what they are missing. Go to Japan, you'll see.

The PS3 looks like a glossy piece of space aged plastic. It does not resemble a quality exterior nor does it blend in at all with any Home Audio/Video equiptment.

The PS3 is not selling big in Japan either you idiot. Its losing at a ratio of 6:1. The difference is that Microsoft did not expect a large market of sales for their console in Japan, while Sony did - and are paying huge for it.

Since your post served no merit, no facts, and gave no useful or true information, you get two thumbs down.

The 360 is not a crappy console, it has its strengths and weaknesses just like the PS3, And the Wii although the most technologically inferior of the 3 is winning at this point in time. (Which can change).

And I wonder how many people on teh PS3 will be enjoying their Halo 3 when the so called "xbox 360 losers" (in your eyes) consoles break?

Oh yeah. None.

Unfortunately you guys are misinformed, but then again, hard-headed people you do not like to maximize information because making swinging statements is much easier for you.

That's why everyone is getting a PS3 because it's the true next gen console

Maybe you can elaborate on this for me, because IIRC, the PS3 is dead last in sales .... everwhere. So how does that reflect "everyone is getting a PS3..."? Who is everyone? Does that just include your "Jones" family household? Perhaps your all the families on your street? Maybe everyone in your in 6th grade english class?

Lastly, if you are going to make all these swinging statements, you would be better served to start off with "In my opinion" or "I think". Facts are facts, and the jumbled mess we call opinions that are pouring out of your mouth wreak like you just ate an onion.
