Microsoft to bring video chat to Xbox 360

Engadget has posted a blurb on Microsoft's new Xbox 360 camera. The new camera brings messaging and video chat to Xbox Live. According to the scanned article, the camera will be released in May.

Microsoft is also due to release a new Quick Charge Kit for the 360's wireless controller in May as well.

Where Do You Put It?

This may be a stupid question, but where do you think you are expected to site it and far away are you expected to be from it? The only reason why I ask is that for "standard" webcam chat with a laptop or desktop computer, you're sat pretty close to both the screen and the camera. Are you expected to put this camera on top of the television and then sit in front of it?

I like the idea of adding more webcams in the world to make video chat much more normal. The follow-up question therefore becomes one of how inter-operable is this going to be? Is this going to run across a proprietary network so that you can only chat with other XBox Live users, or can you chat to anyone with a webcam? Could you, for example, use this to call people using existing VoIP services, such as Skype, that support video chat?

OK, so more than one question...

Maybe it has a zoom feature :P You do rais an interesting point though, since now players are not restricted to the small radius of their controller cords, and can sit at a safe distance from their TV's again.

It will probably come with an extra long USB cord.

too bad it isn't wireless, would make an excellent security system implementation.

I bet you that M$ will a wireless version next year or so. Or logitech will. so don't worry about a wireless cam for the xbox 360.

The Merger
By Sunbird on 2/22/2006 2:00:03 PM , Rating: 2
Consoles that are becoming more like PC's (webcams, internet, upgrades). PC platforms (Viiv and Live!) becoming very standardises and console-ish.

When will they merge?

Like the Eyetoy?!?

I'm liking this idea by Microsoft... So will you be able to play games with it like the Eyetoy does for the PS2? I'm definitely gonna be looking forward to this, lol (sarcasm)... but seriously, with Xbox Live and Video conferencing, this is definitely going to be a good idea... I'll wait and see how Microsoft's going to implement this...

It is true, we are reinventing the PC. All this just to be able to do what the PC has done for years.
