Microsoft introduces the followup to the Xbox 360 Arcade

Microsoft introduced its slimmer, quieter Xbox 360 design last month. The console, which is priced at $299 for the 250GB version, quickly shot to the top of the sales charts for the month of June surpassing both the Wii and PS3.

Today, Microsoft is looking to bolster its efforts in the console market even further with the introduction of a new entry level Xbox 360 with 4GB of flash memory instead of the 250GB HDD. The Xbox 360 4GB also forgoes the shiny black plastic exterior of its older brother for a matte black finish, however, gamers will be happy to hear that 802.11n wireless support is still included.

In other Xbox 360 news, Microsoft also today announced that the Kinect motion control accessory will be priced at $149. A bundle which includes both the Xbox 360 4GB and the Kinect will be available for $299.

"Kinect for Xbox 360 offers tremendous entertainment value for the whole family," said Dennis Durkin, Xbox 360 COO. "With full body, voice and the ability to play games with your friends right out of the box, Kinect is the most unique, complete and affordable way for everyone to enjoy controller-free fun and entertainment."

since the wii is still selling at $199 w/ 2 games & addons--it's actually quite competitive at the price point (it also doesn't require live membership to stream netflix).

I'm not sure what Netflix is like streaming-wise as it's not available outside of the USA, hence I have been incapable of trying it out.
...but the Wii cannot output at HD resolutions, so image quality of streams should in theory be better on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as they can be streamed at a HD resolution.

PS I didnt see this till after my other post about the high sales numbers in europe..

Ok I looked at the charts a few days ago.. 360 beating the wii and PS3 in USA.. beating the PS3 in europe as well..

Usually the XB360 is below wii and close to PS3 in europe sales.. XB360 sales in America always below Wii but above PS3

Looked today.. right now at 7/20/10 1:30 EST USA, VGchartz is showing only the sales that have come in from europe -- XB360 #1 ?! .. never seen that before.. When the rest of the weekly data sales show USA Im gonna guess they are gonna have a strong week.
Weekly hardware chart here:

We're finally in the sub-$300 zone now. Here's hoping this holiday or next year we'll see all consoles for $200 or less.

Word to the wise, while its interesting to look at, vgchartz "data" is generally considered fake. Especially for Europe, where "hard" sales numbers are extremely difficult to come by.

"Real" sources of data include NPD, Chart Track, GFK, press releases by Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft, etc.

Thanks for the matte!

Hilariously, the matte finish on this new "Arcade" 360 is a superior feature to the one on the more expensive version!

I think that's the way to go, cause it feels odd to me that the peripheral is almost as expensive as the console itself ( 150$ vs 200$).

I wish they'd just sell the arcade for 150, which is the current price for the fat 360 arcade. Then again doing that probably makes people realize what an expensive peripheral the Kinect is.

These arcade versions are the new model right?

The model with $gb flash is the silent and improved 360 in the small case?

By StevoLincolnite on 7/20/2010 1:24:13 PM , Rating: 2
One of them yes.

There is also a 250gb "Slim" console as well that is also quiet.

Most of the noise from the "fat" consoles was due to the DVD drive, which has been fixed in the Slim.

The new xbox is just as loud and annoying as the old one, unless you have the game installed to the hd. Then it is silent. Microsoft wasnt completely honest. the sound is extremely annoying if its reading the disc

Media Center Extender

If you have Media Center for Win7 and a CableCard tuner (Ceton) running on your HTPC, this thing makes a great extender / cable box replacement. The original was simply too loud and expensive to use as a replacement. The wireless N is also a huge plus from this perspective.

Will Media Center work with the 4Gb model? If so I am really tempted to get one. As I recall on the older 360 models a HDD was required in order to use Media Center. Is this still the case with this new 4GB model? Thanks.
