Microsoft is loading the 120GB Xbox 360 HDD with lots of stuff

What’s the first thing Microsoft will do with its newly announced 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive? Load it with stuff, of course. Microsoft will be shipping its 120GB drives with lots of game trailers, videos and playable demos, according to a list obtained by Team Xbox.

The bigger drive will come with trailers promoting this year’s bigger titles, such as Forza 2’s customization and damage features, plus videos for Halo Wars, Halo 3 and Fable 2. Microsoft will also include more than a dozen Xbox Live Arcade demos to entice the retro and casual gamer. Demos include Uno, Geometry Wars, Pac-Man, Street Fighter II and more.

Microsoft also says that each drive will come preloaded with between three to five Xbox 360 game demos, with selection depending on region. Titles Lego Star Wars II, Lost Planet (multiplayer Live), Madden '07, Fusion Frenzy 2 and Call of Duty 3 were listed as examples.
Finally, like all current Xbox 360 Premium packages, each hard drive will come with the full version of Hexic HD.

Those upgrading from a 20GB drive should be aware that all preinstalled data on the 120GB will be wiped out following transfer. For new HDD owners, however, Microsoft is giving the users a head start on making even 120GB seem like not enough.

Since the cost of doing this is basically zero, why not? So long as there is an easy way to mass delete stuff.

I wonder if all the free content on XBL adds up to 120GB?

Well there still will be MS's initial investment of setting up a system to put the data on the hard drive, the data isn't just going to appear ready to go on the hard drive by itself.

So the cost of that will be passed on to the consumer. At least its starting to come together as to what makes the drive's inflated price. ;p

Frankly it's a waste of time and money. After buying these drives at probably $60 bulk, they have to have someone physically connect each one to a machine and wait for the data to transfer and then package each one. It still doesn't make up for the $120 markup they are charging for those drives. How hard is it to price these things so people don't feel nickel and dimed with everything? Honestly as ridiculously expensive as the PS3 is, the 360 is really not any better with the way they nickel and dime you for $15 play and charge kits, severely overpriced HDDs, and $60 Xbox live subscriptions. I'm not even getting into the $100 wireless adapter which I can see as being completely optional. I think the cost to own either system ends up being the same ultimately.

The old 20GB drives already came with content preloaded. Why would they be inventing a new system? Why do you think it will even change the process much, unless you assume they do no QA that involves testing the drive?

Think "Halo 3 Legendary" Bundle.

It includes the X360 Elite, Halo 3 vidoegame, Halo 3 faceplate, Halo 3 controller design, 120GB HDD loaded with all of Bungie's "Legendary" content, HDMI cable, Headset, yadda yadda yadda all for...wait for it...

$449-$499 (most likely $479).

Actual release to follow Sony announcing it's first PS3 price-drop of the 60GB (possibly 80GB) version to $499-$549 and elimination of the 20GB version altogther.

Pre-orders to begin in July (coinciding with a probable Halo 3 multi-player Beta upgrade, included with either Blue Dragon or Mass Effect). Price announced will be $50 bucks higher than actual to throw off the competition (i.e. Sony)

BTW, I am NOT a Halo fan and have never played either game. I enjoy predicting (attempting to predict) the moves in the chess match between MS and Sony, however.

So essentially they'll throw on several gigs of stuff (Advertising) on this hard drive, all so it would be wiped out by those that are transferring the data over from their old hard drive? Brilliant!

Well, considering that most if not all of the content is already on Live! for download, I doubt it will make much difference anyway... if the preloaded stuff gets wiped, just re-download it...

or use a utility to back it up first...
