Pimpin' just got easier

For years, applications have been submitted to ICANN -- the company that certifies top-level domains (TLDs) like .com and .net for use online -- to allow a for porn sites to carry the .xxx suffix. Those applications have historically been denied.

Many have argued that by creating an .xxx domain, it would be easier for schools and other organizations to block access to porn. Last week, ICANN was again considering the .xxx TLD and was expected to let the application move forward in the approval process for the first time.

EWeek reports that ICANN has decided to allow the application for .xxx domains to move forward. After the approval by the ICANN board of directors, the application moves to the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee. The application could still be denied at this point.

Even if the .xxx TLD is approved, most feel it will have no real impact on the ability to filter or recognize pornographic websites. The problem lies in the fact that there is no way to force the porn industry to adopt the .xxx domain. If the .xxx domain is easier to block by filtering software and if the porn site already has a popular and usable .com address there is no reason that porn sites would move to the new extension.

Donna Rice Hughes, president of Enough is Enough said in a statement, "Expecting pornographers to voluntary give up their successful .com addresses and locate solely on the .xxx domain is both foolish and shortsighted. Arguments presented suggesting that the U.S. Congress will be able to pass a law to require all pornographers to leave the .xxx space would likely not pass, and even if passed, would likely be either struck down in the federal courts or be unenforced. Historically, all attempts by Congress to regulate Internet pornography have not been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court."

Didn't read TFA. The big, purple, Bloomberg ads make this page look too gay to look at. No trolling here; I'm dead serious.

Screw that.

In this ad infested world he should ask himself why did he even notice the ads in the first place. I dont have ad blocker but i didn't notice the ads either until i scrolled up and actually *looked* for them.

Yep, the ads are invisible to me. I didn't notice them until after that guy complained about it.

I was on a work computer without FF installed, of course.

Simpler than it might seem... (or not...)

1 - allow creation of this TLD;
2 - only allow new "adult" sites to apply for ".xxx" TLD;
3 - only allow re-applying for the same ".com", ".net" etc if the adult site will also buy a ".xxx" and move all it's adult contents to that site (allow for a large enough window - 6 months - for that to happen)

Ok, adult sites might not be happy, but seriously, buying a new url is not that expensive and they make boat loads of money.

On the other hand, why wouldn't this be applied to say: Nazi sites, etc, etc, etc, "I don't like this topic" sites, etc, etc, ......

Though questions...

Because 99% of the internet is pr0n. Duh, lol.

This transition will only be effective unless they make it illegal for adult sites to exist on .com domains.

should have used

Nothing much going on here besides a boatload more money for registrars from every company on the globe with even a minor internet presence. It's not like Facebook will allow facebook.xxx be owned by some other entity. Multiply this by many million.

Wha?

"We are going to continue to work with them to make sure they understand the reality of the Internet.  A lot of these people don't have Ph.Ds, and they don't have a degree in computer science." -- RIM co-CEO Michael Lazaridis
