Microsoft's artificial 50MB limit for Xbox Live Arcade games
is really starting to put a damper on game development. Microsoft originally enacted
the limit to ensure that games
could fit onto a single 64MB Xbox 360 memory card, but now it's becoming a
burden.
One of my favorite PC games of all time, Worms, is being
neutered due to the limit. Some of the audio tracks and themes are being
dropped from the release in order to save space. Even more detrimental,
however, is that Team17 is removing the baseball bat, skunk and Holy Hand
grenade from the weapons arsenal.
Martyn
"Spage" Brown of Team17 says that "these omissions fail to
make a serious indent on the actual gameplay." I beg to differ. The
baseball bat is a great weapon for close up attacks. Just the thought of
angling the bat to make your opponent catch just the right amount of air just
brings a smile to my face. And dropping the Holy Hand grenade? Come on now!
Interestingly enough, Microsoft has allowed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to blow
past the 50MB limit. No reason was given for why this title was given the
go ahead while Worms wasn't. "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is
one of the most popular games of all time, and you can [bet] that you'll see
similar high-quality games come to Xbox Live Arcade in the future," said
Greg Canessa, Xbox Live Arcade group manager.
That being said, despite the disappointments with the
upcoming release of Worms on XBLA,
I'll plunk down some MS Points to be able to play the classic game in full HD
glory.
