Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade game size limit takes away from the upcoming release of worms in HD

Microsoft's artificial 50MB limit for Xbox Live Arcade games is really starting to put a damper on game development. Microsoft originally enacted the limit to ensure that games could fit onto a single 64MB Xbox 360 memory card, but now it's becoming a burden.

One of my favorite PC games of all time, Worms, is being neutered due to the limit. Some of the audio tracks and themes are being dropped from the release in order to save space. Even more detrimental, however, is that Team17 is removing the baseball bat, skunk and Holy Hand grenade from the weapons arsenal.

Martyn "Spage" Brown of Team17 says that "these omissions fail to make a serious indent on the actual gameplay." I beg to differ. The baseball bat is a great weapon for close up attacks. Just the thought of angling the bat to make your opponent catch just the right amount of air just brings a smile to my face. And dropping the Holy Hand grenade? Come on now!

Interestingly enough, Microsoft has allowed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to blow past the 50MB limit. No reason was given for why this title was given the go ahead while Worms wasn't. "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the most popular games of all time, and you can [bet] that you'll see similar high-quality games come to Xbox Live Arcade in the future," said Greg Canessa, Xbox Live Arcade group manager.

That being said, despite the disappointments with the upcoming release of Worms on XBLA, I'll plunk down some MS Points to be able to play the classic game in full HD glory.

Well, my take on it is probably that Konami pressed Microsoft for extra space and used reasoning like the inability to actually present the game in a decent form without breaking the size barrier. Although, I guess they could've split the game up, but fans wouldn't be happy with that. Microsoft, knowing that a popular game like Symphony of the Night can draw new players (a la Gears of War), probably caved into their demands.

I doubt Team 17 really pushed Microsoft on this issue, although maybe they're planning on pulling a Lumines and adding these features in later (and hopefully for free)! I'm a bit curious now though... is this Worms Live based off of Worms Armageddon? I never tried Worms World Party, but I was quite the fan of WA as it reminded me of my early DOS days playing the game called "Gorilla" where you had to insert an angle and velocity to throw your banana bomb at the other gorilla (the bomb being affected by the wind as well). It was a pretty sweet game ;).

Hell yes I remember Gorillas, I used to love that game!

Its a big shame they've dropped the bat, multiplayer just wont be the same with the nice thwack to your mates worm sending him for a swim :(

As long as we still get the banana bomb, aquasheep, and ninja rope.
What am I saying, I'm praying for a Team17 Worms release for the PS3! (hey, they did Lemmings:PS3)

Huh?

I can understand removing some music since that would take up significant space, but removing the baseball bat? That makes no sense at all.

Is Team17 simply trying "punish" MS for the limit?
