This allows for porting between Windows RT, Xbox 360 and PC devices

NVIDIA and Epic Games were able to show off Unreal Engine 3 via tech demo "Epic Citadel" on a Windows RT tablet powered by Tegra 3 today. 
At the ASUS Vivo Tab RT press conference at IFA 2012 in Berlin, the tablet displayed the first-ever Unreal Engine 3 app on the Windows RT platform
The Unreal Engine 3 is the full PC version rather than an altered mobile app, which allows for the porting of PC and Xbox 360 games to Windows RT. Games on Windows RT can also be ported back to those other platforms. 

"The Unreal Engine 3-powered 'Epic Citadel' demonstration for Windows RT tablets implements the full DirectX 9 pipeline, with shaders and materials, all running beautifully on Tegra 3," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. "By porting the full engine as opposed to a modified mobile version, NVIDIA and Epic have made it easy for UE3 developers around the world to bring their best content to Windows RT, Windows 8 and NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor. Windows RT code is available to licensees from Epic now and we're excited to see the great games they develop with it."

This is a huge boost for Windows, since it will likely further connect Microsoft devices. Windows 8 will be released October 26

Yes, I am sure all of the PC developers (all both of them?) are going to be absolutely THRILLED with MS taking 20-30% off of the top of every game/app purchase.

You think they don't pay for distribution now? You think Valve distributes on Steam for free? The Google Play market, is that free? What about the cost of printing all of those discs/manuals? What about shipping them? What about the B&M's cut?

Some people are just stuck in the past and others understand USB and Bluetooth technology. The only thing left to complain about is the fact I won't be playing on a 27" monitor anymore.

It is old, but that just puts tablets and phones into perspective on their graphical capability's, which to say isn't that great right now.

It will be interesting to see how far they can push the capabilities on tablets in regards to gaming in the next few years or if it will end up like other platforms and stagnate as everyone uses the same game engine and Nolan North as the voice actor.

UE3 is the current unreal engine, however UE4 is supposed to be released soon. I think the real issue is that with Windows RT UE3 is running DX9 instead of DX11. My understanding is there is a hardware limitation to running DX11 on Windows RT.

Yes!. It is the gpu on the tablet not supporting DX11. This is a limitation which might seem to go away since Open GL is quickly replacing it as Valve has demonstrated with Steam in Linux. Android core is Linux kernel.

Well stated. Sad or not technology changes. Roll with it. Years back I was all about the biggest TV. Now I am content with movies on my iPad. Works quite nicely. I lay next to my gf with my ipad and watch a movie with headphones on while she watches a movie on tv.

I've a problem with your statement on two levels.

Sad or not technology changes. Roll with it.

"Roll with it" implies that we should simply take whatever the game makers want us to have and like it. Rubbish! WE, the users, are the ones who decide what is and is not popular. I'm one of those people that will be skipping the Apple and MS tablet offerings in favor of Android tablets. But not for gaming. I have game systems for that.

Years back I was all about the biggest TV.

And that loss of interest has little to do with trends and more your adaptation to your own needs instead of "keeping up with the Jones's".

I lay next to my gf with my ipad and watch a movie with headphones on while she watches a movie on tv.

Seriously? What the heck is the point of even having a GF if you are not going to spend your "together" time doing something, well, together? You are a perfect example of technology being a distraction and burden to life rather then a help. Put the damned tablet down and watch something together. Take turns picking what to watch. Take out the damn ears phones and connect with her on some level other than just being in the same room.

I guess I'm one of those about whom you speak. Bluetooth controllers are great, but as few developers support them, it's kind of a mute point for the masses. Touch screens are simply not enough. And I have a 37" 120hz TV for my gaming display[Consoles and PC]. Trust that most serious gamers will always want a larger screen. Tablets and phones are not enough, and likely never will be...

Half the challenge of playing on a touch-interface is the interface.

Imagine playing your mobile games on PC with a mouse/keyboard... talk about boring.
But on a 3.5" touchscreen?? Hours of entertainment!

I personally would like to see a port of StarCraft 2. With finger tapping it would be able to do lots of little commands much faster than with a mouse, all I would need is a finer pointer tip for my finger.

Games are designed around their interface--it is one of the fundamentals of good game design. Take Duck Hunt--it's a blast with a light gun but try playing it on a smartphone where all you'd have to do is tap your finger on the duck to shoot them. It wouldn't be that much fun anymore.

Or what about Robotron 2084 with only one joystick and a fire button... oh wait, they did that with Berserk. Not all games have great interfaces and are still fun but these are few and far between.

There is crossover, however. I can easily see RTS games like StarCraft/Supreme Commander being amazingly awesome on a touchscreen combo interface--say with a mouse and a touchscreen or touchscreen and keyboard. Imagine being able to click on individual units or drag a box around a group of units without having to find your mouse cursor in all the onscreen clutter.

To me, being able to do this would be a dream come true. You could easily issue orders to your units/queue or do a multitude of other things faster and more efficiently than a mouse. Not to mention the game designer wouldn't have to worry about cursors being lost in the madness either.

It is only a matter of time...

APM heavy RTS games like Starcraft are heavily reliant on a keyboard for control, not to mention having the more precise control of a mouse. It wouldn't work.

If an RTS was designed around a touchscreen then it would work, but it wouldn't be like the games you mentioned. Autumn Dynasty on the iPad is a stellar RTS, but it is also much slower than anything like SC2.

Otherwise you'd really need the keyboard, and even then I believe a mouse is better than touch in this circumstance since it requires only fine hand movement to make a selection, not moving your entire hand quickly over a screen.

It can be done, certianly, but like any other game there are adjustments to be made when going to a different interface. It also isn't to say that touchscreen is the worst interface, it is actually superior to others for certain games. I'm certain that Frozen Synapse will be better on the iPad than it is on the Mac/PC, and numerous board games, card games, deck building games, and things like World Of Goo and Plants vs Zombies are better than their mouse and keyboard counterparts.

It could be relatively simple to make SC2 touch-friendly. Move the action grid on the left side or under the minimap so you can use your left hand for actions like with the keyboard and for minimap navigation at the same time.
It would be more straight-forward with an active pen in your right hand instead of finger touch, so you get the classical mouse hover, rightclick button, etc, but maybe with some good multitouch design you can use your right hand for inspection (i.e. like mouse hover), selection and targeting, with different multi-finger combinations to disambiguate between them.

so the long and short of it is that software progression has stagnated to the point at which a bloody tablet will soon be able to offer the highest quality of PC gaming available?

Take a look at the Microsoft Surface pics; plenty of them include keyboards. Both versions include USB ports; hook up a mouse and have at it.

That's the thing that's kinda intriguing about the Surface; it looks like they're going even further than the Asus Transformer line and truly making a tablet/laptop.

'course I could be mistaken and RT could only support USB as charger/data, but I'd be surprised if so.

RT fully supports USB peripherals including a Mouse and Keyboard. Some of the fancier ones may require additional drivers.

Windows RT supports the Xbox 360 gamepad natively you know. It just depends on the developers to add support (which I suspect most will when it makes sense).
